Timing is it a kx 250 or kx250f it is 4 stroke and has a carb. the real problem is that it back fires thru exhaust, won't run.my guess is late firing so how do the timing marks line up? Then I will know if who ever he let work on it just ripped him off.he has bought new cpu new mag& pick up coil and new coil put new rings and jug still not running.could the pickupcoil get far enough out to cause a late fire? Is there just one keyed way that the fly wheel?that controls the pick up will go?

Sounds like a valve timing problem to me. Put the engine at TDC (top dead center). There will be marks on the cam gear that should be aligned with the top of the head casting. This is something that could be damaging to the engine so be careful. A manual is a good investment.

hi mate on the carb you will find 2 screws an idle screw and mixture screw the screw that is th smallest and the furthest in is the mixture screw you will reccomend a manual to adjust the mixture in the manual it will say e.g.mixture screw: 1 1/2 turns out this means screw the mixture screw right in till i cant go no more and unscrew it the amount off turns it says good luck

Check the routing of the wires under the tank. Also check the wire connections. It sounds like the installation of the tank is pulling on the wires causing a momentary disconnection of a power wire.
Alternate to that, are the spark plug wires grounding against the tank?

Please rate this solution. Thanks!

SOURCE: wont run...

Any water in the gas? Remove the water trap bowl at the bottom of the petcock, (gas valve). Any water or trash in the bowl? Drain a cup of gas from the tank. Any water or trash in the cup? Dump it, clean it and re-mount it, ( not all bikes have a water trap bowl ).

Get a fresh set of stock NGK spark plugs. Clean or replace the air filter. You seem to be pretty thorough in what you have done, but since plugs and filter weren't mentioned I had to ask.

Assuming you are getting air, gas and spark, and the timing is correct then it should run. Right? Not necessarily. Can the bike breathe? If pressure cant get out of the tailpipe the bike won't run. Mufflers can sometimes collapse internally. This restricts the flow of burned gasses. causing backpressure. If nothing goes out of the cylinder then nothing goes in.

Try removing the exhaust pipes. Now see if it will run. Get back to me because I would like to know what you find.

SOURCE: Ninja 250 wont start

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially:

  • check for the presence of IGN+12 on one of the terminals of the ignition coil;
  • check that the other terminal has a pulsating voltage when cranking;
  • verify that all connectors are plugged in tight and no corrosion on the pins/terminals specially on the pulser wires;
  • exercise the sidestand and spray WD40 on the sidestand switch;
  • ensure that the neutral light is lit when starting;
  • exercise the clutch lever and spray WD40 on the clutch switch;
  • try starting with the clutch lever pulled.

Please postback results of tests.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: i have a kawasaki kx 250 2 stroke an it was

hi murray,

nice bike you have there.

have you checked on the carb ans see if the jet is right and the mixture is normal, this is usually the case if the carb is not tuned right.

better of reset the card, open it clean it, then set to default even if you are using your mixture of gas and 2t. just set to factory default. once it starts give it a few run, 1-2 hours, then set it to how you want your mixture to be.

hope this helps,

regards,

voodoo

2 stroke or 4? if 2 stroke definitely jetted wrong choking makes it rich tells me your main jet is too lean (smaller hole) you need to pull carb check jets for plugage clean jets write down numbers check dealer for correct jet size for your elevation if 4 stroke back fire thru carb indicates timing is off or bad intake valves or cam lobe worn

What or symptons of incorect valve adjustment on 250 honda recon? the exhaust pipe is turning red, hot after running or idling for a short time. also back fires.

has nothing to do with valve clearance!
You are running to lean at idle.
Your idle jet is most likely plugged up!
Do not drill out, blow out with carb cleaner and compressor. If it is too plugged up replace it. Mixture screw should be at about 2 turns out.

Im guessing right now it will only idle with the choke on, or run with the choke partially on. When you let off the throttle off, deceleration it back fires the most.

I do recommend having a trained tech service the carb!

Backfire thru exaust on a 2004 kx 250

remove stator cover and flywheel (puller required), verify crankshaft key is not sheered, and stator plate is in its proper position. There is no timing mark on that flywheel because it is irrelevant and not needed.
This is most likely not a flywheel timing issue but a CDI timing issue. The CDI timing is governed by the TPS switch on the carburetor telling the CDI when to change timing maps and curves. If the carburetor is dirty and you cranked up the idle to run off the main circuit instead of the proper idle circuit this can happen. Or you have an improperly set, or failed TPS switch on the carb.

try a new spark plug. if u fowl out a plug some time they will not fire under compression.2 strokes need. fuel,fire and air, very simple engines.it is possible crank seal are bad .that doesn't allow the engine to create vacuum in the crank case.thus fuel and air will not make it to combustion chamber.
