Sounds like external shift mechanism has worn out springs,replace them,if that does not work than your transmission shift forks are worn or bent,and or gear dogs are worn,in this case motor must be removed.
No neutral light, will not start without clutch lever pulled in (and possibly sidestand up, if it has a safety switch). If the broken wire is touching a ground, the neutral light will not go off.
unfortunately if it often jumps out of a particular gear it is usually a bent or worn shift fork, and is usually advisable to replace that gear as well as other worn parts and bearings while the gear box is apart.
you are going to haveto trace the line into the bike and unclip it from the harness. after that you are going to have to remove it from the mount and then you are done.
