Ducati 620..while riding it started pouring white smoke from exhaust and smelled of oil
SOURCE: white smoke
Hi,
Sounds typical of head gasket failure.
With this you get oil into cylinders / water into cylinders, burning oil, loosing water - but no leaks. "boiling" of radiator and overflows.
Check your coolant and oil levels - they will be low.
Get a few quotes for a head gasket replacement - and timing belt change, as it has to come off when you do this anyway & no sense putting an old one on - they often snap if retensioned.
If this solves your problem, please take a moment to rate as Fixya! thanks.
SOURCE: smoke like hell
If it's only smoking on startup, I wouldn't worry about it too much. What color is the smoke? White means leaking valve stem seals. If it's black, it means you are running ruch, but you want that during the warmup phase anyway. If it's running fineexcept for a little smoke on startup, I wouldn't worry about it (enough to tear into the carbs again anyway) Wink Oh if it was your floats, it would more likely be smoking through the rev range all the time.

give the air filter a blow out m8,, and change the plugs to a hotter grade,, ie if u have ngk b8es or summat try b9,,that type of thing,

Its most likely your rings. They get worn and start letting oil into the combustion chamber. They aren't extremely hard to replace.
