Question about Honda VT 600 CD Shadow Motorcycles
My 05 makes a strange noise at low speeds. It sounds like a chain dragging across something. The sound is coming from the engine area. i have recently ridden the bike pretty hard and I notice the sound is getting louder. It usually happens in 1st gear and 2nd if I am going less than 30mph and not accelerating. The bike has not lost power and no problems starting. recently replaced the drive chain, rear sprockets, rear brakes and oil change. The noise was there before the maintenence work and ist still there after. It seems to be getting louder.
They are a bit noisy sometimes, hopefully it's nothing serious, good solid bikes those so you should be good.
Check you have the correct oil in there, if your running a thin oil, it may increase the noise and wearing.
Try this, when its parked up and idling cold (when you start it up in the morning) get a screwdriver or somthing similar place the metal part of the screwdriver on the engine where you think the noise is coming from, then put your ear on the handle, doing this you will be able to pin point exactly where the noise is coming from buy moving the screwdriver around the casting also you can really hear her tick.
do it again when she's hot noting the difference of any. If it continues to get noisier, strip her down and have a look in there, could be just the tensioner/guides.

SOURCE: Engine knock at high revs
Sounds like Pre-ignition, aka Detonation, aka Engine knock. Carbon deposits build up on the head, valves and piston. They can get hot enough to ignite the fuel before the spark plug has a chance to. This is the Pre-ignition noted above. This is VERY hard on the engine. Take the head off the cylinder then beat the valve area with with a hammer followed by aggressively beating the top of the piston. Pre-ignition does the same thing. Not good for the top end, and not good for the crankshaft. Use only good quality premium gas. Change to a spark plug one heat range colder than the stock plug. Seal up any air leaks on the intake system. Running a lean fuel mix means running hot.
A “very helpful” rating for this answer? Thanks!

how long since the valve clearances have been checked sounds like its long over due for a major service unless your friend is competent to acurately measure the clearances & replace the shims with the correct thickness ones to bring it back into specs if not bite the bullet dip into the pocket & pay a reputable mechanic to do the job its unlikely your friend will have a shim kit for your own peace of mind get thee to a mechanic you havent said wether or not you wanted to give it a go if so purchase the correct shop maual & familirize your self with it good luck

It is possible that the first gear shift fork in the transmission is bent causing the 'dog-clutch' between two gears to just barely mesh. With engine off, push the shift into first and clutch lever released. Rock the bike back and forth to see if the gearing seems to be jumping in and out. There may be a problem with the shift lever shaft mechanism not allowing a complete shift into first gear. Hope this helps!

When shifting into 1st gear, only do it when the engine is at or near idle speed. That should "fix" the noise problem. Clean the air filter and install a new spark plug. Then drain the carburetor float bowl. Chances are water condensed in the gas tank has made it into the carb and is affecting performance.
