Hi, I just had same prob with a mates 07 450sx and it happened when riding it, when i pulled it down i noticed the timing was out. It was a little low on oil and i think what happened was hydrolic cam chain adjuster let go and it spun a couple teeth on exhaust cam. i redone timing and it turned ova fine so i pulled head off and checked valves and they were fine some how and now its goin great. hope this helps and hope your lucky enough not to bend valves. the bike shop told him $2000 at least before even lookin at it.

I'd start with simple things like checking the plug and doing a few electrical tests.Some tests you may be able to do yourself like resistance checks.Compare the following spec with what you get ; Primary coil . 25~35 0hms Secondary 5050~7550 Valve clearance inlet 0.10~0.15 exuast 0.15~0.20 both cold and in mm.

It could be a faulty coil inside the magneto, wrong timing or a problem ranging from cdi unit, wiring from the former up to the spark plug.Sometimes the cap that sits on the spark plug could cause this.Basically you are having a firing problem, which means combustion chamber is not getting the right spark for proper combustion.Sometimes even an improper ground from chassis to engine could be the cause of this problem.Hope this helps.Any questions then please ask..O I forgot, try a different spark plug,sometimes these could cause this problem.
