Is it my clutch??

I own a 1997 Heritage Softtail and ive recently started hearing a squeak when the engine is hot and the bike is in gear moving at any speed, I can pull the clutch in and the squeak stops but when i let out on the clutch the squeak starts back. I do not hear this noise in neutral or any other time besides when im in gear and rolling. I Have checked my belt tension, and my chain tension both seemed fine and oil is at the correct level.

Hi, Donnie you could have a main shaft bearing going south but I think it's your belt, if not contact me at the email address below and we shall execute plan B. Belt squeaking or chirping or buzzing or zinging are sounds that make up the orchestra of "Belt Music" these noises are caused by a variety of conditions that can usually be corrected ie. belt tension too loose, swing arm alignment no true, warped or loose sprockets and bent sprocket guards, but the majority of music is mainly caused by miles and miles of heat build up from the engine, transmission, and sprockets transferring that heat to the drive belt, and over time the sides of the belt will become crystallized/glazed into a finish that is harder than "Chicken Lips" and everyone knows that "Chicken Lips" are harder than diamonds. This is the reason your brakes squeak. There are many home remedies out there, fan belt spray, rubbing a bar of soap on the sides, Dupont Teflon Lubricant, grease, silicone spray, WD-40 etc. etc. these are no more than Band-Aids and the noise just comes back in a couple of days, You must remove the "Chicken Lips" The first and most important thing you can do are align the belt in the sprockets so that it tracks dead center not rubbing up against the sprocket guard this may require using shims on the front and rear sprockets, while the belt is off, check the teeth for being broken-cracked-missing, check the sprockets for having square teeth instead of rounded teeth, if any of these conditions exist, replace the belt and both sprockets. If everything looks ok then place the belt on its side and with a drill or die grinder install a 2-3 inch velcro sanding pad with a Scotch Brite disc, gently dust both sides of the belt to remove the shiny crystallized glaze the surface will become dull once the fresh material is exposed. Reinstall the shimmed sprockets and reconditioned belt and adjust the tension with no rider on board to 5/16-3/8" up and down with 10lbs. of force, I have had excellent results with this method and it is cheaper than buying a $300 new belt. Again the key to this procedure is "BELT ALIGNMENT" you need to keep the sides of the belt away from the sprocket guards. 1997 Isuzu hombre NO movement when into gear, left IT in first gear let UP off the clutch and the truck didn't jump or CUT off. . What's wrong with it?

MT trans. got it. (said clutch let up.. is the clue)
engine is running right? (sorry)
and you shift to all gears, and car does not move, RIGHT?

if the clutch slips and car will not move in ALL gears.
the clutch is bad, or if a cable clutch, never setting free play on cable is the cause,... done 100s.
or if hydraulic actuated clutch pedal (im too lazy to look)

i get in car,
i start engine in neutral. (did you) or start in gear with clutch to floor.?
i then select all gears, and release clutch and car will not move.
like that.... and win. (i can diagnose any clutch, ive wrecked many racing, so.... see all horrors) and fixed them by self. all.

if you can only move car , starting engine in gear.?
that is bad clutch cable or actuator (slave or master cylinder)

is the clutch locked all times, or slips all the time.
see? only that need be said.

That does not sound good. I suggest you get it to a dealer before you do any additional damage.

Hi I have a harley FLSTN 2008 Softtail Heritage. I was riding my bike today when it suddenly stopped letting me select gears. It will select gears as normal however, it remains idle like it is in the...

Possibly a clutch or primary chain problem or more than likely the layshaft in the gearbox is not driving the mainshaft due to a pawl missing on the selector. The main drive belt is OK I suppose?
Strip down the gear box to find out.

I just bought a used 2009 Heritage Classic. I currently have a 2004 Deuce. The Deuce has V&H pipes and the Heritage has some slip on pipes. I hear a whirling sound out of the Heritage and not out...

It could be the transmission that you're hearing. Harley changed the way they cut the gears in the '06 models I think. I'm not really sure because the Twin Cam powered bikes are not something I work on. I work on the older bikes. If you're concerned about the noise, take it to a dealer and let a mechanic ride it or if you have a friend that has a bike later than '06, swap bikes for a ride and see what you hear.

Starter makes grinding noise.... Can you help me? 1997 heritage softtail.

The first thing I'd check is the jackshaft and the ring gear on the outer clutch hub. Disconnect the battery. Drain and remove the outer primary. Inspect the ring gear and jackshaft looking for "roughness" on the teeth of the two gears of broken teeth. If you find any, you'll have to replace the parts.

If those parts look good, your problem is probably the "starter clutch" inside the starter. This is the one way bearing type device that allows your starter to turn the engine over but then freewheels the starter once the engine does start. This part can be replaced without having to purchase an entire starter but you'll have to disassemble the starter to replace it.

Did you adjust the freeplay on your clutch lever? You should havee 3-5 mm of freeplay. If so, maybe youjust need a new clutch.

many things can cause this ,if you change your seating postion ( lean forward / move backwards does it go away?....

front forks loose at triple tree,
new front / rear tire more aggressive tread than before,
front wheel loose,
worn head bearings,
bent rim,
loose spokes if any,
wrong tire pressures,
loose handle bars
,some new addition to change the handling of the bike , rear seat rest etc,

When i rev up my bike i can hear a knocking noise
