if it won't start in park but you can start it in nuteral it could be the park nuteral switch on the tranny

If battery connections are sound , try the inhibitor switch (Nuteral selector Sw on gearbox) ie Car must be in nuteral before engine will crank. You can slightly rock gear selector but be CAREFUL ! do not select drive.

sounds like you have a worn or bad synchronizer.by the way if you have either the freelander or the discovery; there are 3 recalls on each model.

check your starter relay if that isnt it then it is either the starter or the nuteral saftey switch
