Starter for my 1980 gl1100 goldwing will not turn over. All I hear is a click from the start solenoid. Battery appears to be good voltage above 12v. How can I test to be sure if it's the starter or the solenoid without removing starter from bike?

Re: starter will not turn over
Just uncap the wire going to the plugs. Kick the starter and hold the naked end of the wire close to the body. If you don't get a sharp sparking from the ends of the wire to the body then you'll know there is insufficient current being supplied to it by start solenoid...............sodeep

while trying to start an engine, and only the solenoid clicks, there are these 3 things- no juice from the battery, starter corroded contacts(the big cables) or starter is shot. so first make sure the battery is charged, next make sure the cable mounts from battery to starter are clean(no rust), if that is all good and doesnt start , remove starter and have it tested.
