On my ktm 250 two stroke enduro bike when i go to move off from a standstill in 1st gear theres a strange noise it sounds like something is slipping and i can feel it vibrate/buzz but it only happens when moving off from a standstill. the bike moves off as normal and runs perfect it doesnt do it when on the move slowly or when throttle wide open.i noticed this about 4 weeks ago and it only did it twice when out yesterday it happened about 10 times.also about 4 weeks ago i noticed my coolant kept gettin low so i replaced tha cap and this solved that problem but i dont know how long the coolant was low because i bought the bike 2nd hand and noticed the coolant was low after 2 weeks! apart from this the bike is superb!!!

Hi,sounds like the clutch plates or the clutch basket .

Testimonial: "it was the clutch plates a previous owner must have been a bit lazy on the oil changes evidence the plates had been overly warm!!! "

As for the top end cond. whitch you should be replacing your piston and rings soon enough then you'll see any overheating damage if any. check your maitainance schedule for how often to service piston/ring/ex valve, etc. cylenders are very costly pistons are cheap. the noise/vibration is probably your rear shock linkage. it's comomn to replace the bushing/bearing on top of your swingarm

Will not shift into first gear

Sounds like your clutch is out of adjustment, or needs to be bled. Most of the ktm's use a Magura hydraulic clutch which can be bled using Mineral Oil. DO NOT USE BRAKE FLUID.

I have a 2003 ktm 250sx and when shifting at high rpm's it won't shift.

How is your clutch? Does it slip or drag when starting out? When you put it into 1st gear when starting out does the bike lunge forward? Hold it in first gear with the clutch in and rev the bike up. See if the bike wants to move forward with the clutch in.It sounds to me like your clutch isn't set right or getting worn out. Much easier to shift at low rpms on a clutch than high rpms. I hope this helps...

2009 KTM 250 exc-f excessive oil use, no apparent oil leaks or blue smoke

It is normal for these bikes to use some oil. A typical, maintained 250 4 stroke will use a pint of oil or more in one day of riding - depending on a lot of variables, of course. Oil consumption on these four strokes is quite typical.

I want to get back into motocross and have been told that the 2006 KTM sx 250 is the bike to buy. Is this true

My honest opinion? (40 years of riding, three years of motocross, and 15 years of hare scrambles)
All bikes are good, KTM...Honda...Kawasaki...Yamaha...Suzuki
It really up to maintenance, rider ability, and of course a newer the bike doesn't hurt either.
Go with what you can get parts for, and you'll be able to work with.

RATTERLY SOUND FROM POWER VALVES OR EXHAUST CONTROL VALVE.

Gooped up power valve should not produce noise. One would think it the valve was that loose, or the spring were gone it would develope a lower, strange curved, punchy power band, but not make noise. Still, it wouldn't hurt to see which spring (or lack thereof) is in the valve.

The run-on, rough high RPM and noise would tend to make me think of a lean condition. How's the plug looking?

Transmission grinds going into 1st and sometimes pops out of gear

Not sure whether helps you but I had an 1989 KX250 about 16 years ago that did the same thing. My selectors were worn but I had raced enduros fairly hard on the bike & the gear box had copped a fair amount of abuse.
I could be wrong but I would say the motor will have to come out an the the crankcases split in half to get to the gearbox. Pretty easy on a 2 stroke, pain in the bum if it's a 4 stroke.
Bit of advice when you pull apart a gearbox. Lay parts out in the order you take them out otherwise you will have fun putting it all back together.

Noisy gear

Yep normal. All my KTM's do that. I don't even hear it anymore because it's mentally filtered out. ;),
