I have got the same thing. Have traced the knocking through the engine with a stethoscope and found nothing. Sounds like a bad loose tappet (valve clearance). Nothing found on engine. Have finally traced the knock to fuel tank. Take the cap off and you can hear it plainly. Haven\'t found cause as yet but mine is a kz import so wonder if it has Yankee evap control valve or something in the tank. Will update if I find out. Re: Got z550 when start got knocking noise when on tick...
Many old kawasaki's had camshaft movement when cold which caused a knocking sound, once hot all expanded, no movement, i just put up with it on the few i had

Hi Troy I owned a motor bike years ago and I had the same problem, It would start off with a quiet knocking sound and get louder then suddenly stop but start up quietly again and again and so on which turned out to be the timing chain was worn.... SERIOUS mate. Good luck......
Hi Ricd, I owned a honda 750 years ago and it would start ticking and get louder and stop suddenly then start ticking and get louder and stop suddenly again and again and so on, It was a worn timing chain......
did you jump start? if you did the car is getting all power from the host battery and the motor run, took cable off motor stopped which means your alternator is not charging.
If the "knocking" noise sounds like it's coming from the lower end, listen to see if it's around the clutch area. My was making a "knocking" noise, only on cold starts, which sounded like the bike was trying to engage into gear. I drained the fluid from the clutch system and refilled with clean DOT 4 brake fluid. This stopped the problem.
Ironically enough, I was having the "ticking" problem too. When I would start my bike, about 30 seconds into warming it up, I heard a ticking noise for 2 -3 seconds of the right side of the bike. The Wing uses a hydraulic Valve and Tappet system which will, eventually, make noise if you run "low grade" fuel in the Wing. Go to your local Wal-Mart, or parts store, and buy a can of Sea Foam. Follow the directions on the bottle for the amount to use with a full tank of fuel (add it to your gas tank, not your crankcase). Fill your tank with Premium fuel and add the Sea Foam. Do this for two fill-ups and this should clean your valves and clear up your noise(s).
NOTE: any fuel with Ethanol in it is NOT good for bikes or cars and will cause buildup on your Valves. Sea Foam ALWAYS works. This is a cheap way to find out if it is just deposits or if you are going to need a mechanic.
might be the valves have been damaged running without oil
- or the crankshaft / camshaft / main bearings
most probably you have to let the engine be rebuilt by a mechanic
(expect cost of more than US$ 2.000)
or get another (used) engine at a scrapyard
it may need a lifter or valve adjustment when cold they will tick or knock depending on how loose or worn out then when it warms up they swell with heast and noise stops. after adjusting or replacing it will stop making noise
could be yur water pump going do you leak anti freeze or oil? also if a older model could be ot of timeing check your distributor cap and see if its loose good luck
