Initially, before the 'fix', determine which is at fault:

• fuel gauge (least likely);
• wiring (likely);
• fuel level sender (most likely).

• if ignition switch off, gauge still reads full, faulty gauge;
• if fuel level sensor connector disconnected and gauge moves back to low, sender faulty;
• wiring / connector would have to be visually checks and continuity checked using an ohmmeter.
