is gas good, are you getting enough? carbs or injectors could be gummed up from bad gas over winter storage. Berrymans B12 fuel additive works very well for cleaning it out, double dose run til hot, leave to rest overnight and try again.is gas good, are you getting enough? carbs or injectors could be gummed up from bad gas over winter storage. electric ignition doesent need setting, as there are no wearing parts it doesnt change. Backfire is more likely an air leak in the inlet or exaust gaskets. Whitish brown is fairly normal, all white may be a little lean If you suspect lean fuel mixture due to hesitation etc, see if it improves with the choke on. Make sure valve clearances are correct
It could be the speed of one carburetor is faster than the other. This causes the backfiring as well as forces one cylinder to run lean which causes the tapping noise. You will experience an identical tapping or "ping" when you get close to empty on main fuel and need to switch to reserve. Most likely you or the previous owner unknowingly adjusted the speed of the rear carburetor down because of the high stock idle not realizing the front carburetor needs to be slowed down to match. While running simply turn the idle adjust screw clockwise on the rear carburetor until the idle smooths out and the backfiring/tapping stops.
The exhaust manafold should NOT glow red, check for intake manafold leak, this can cause a lean running condition and can lead to severe engine damage.
Sounds like a very lean mix; confirm by checking the sparkplug tips. If the burn is very light brown to almost whitish, then it would be lean - too much air, too little fuel. Check for an air leak in the air filter box/enclosure. This would also happen if the air filter has been replaced with an aftermarket free breather (like K & Ns) or the exhaust has been replaced and no jettings done.
These will backfire when you let off the throttle if the idle is set low. When set low enough to sound "right" you will get the backfire. Set the idle up a bit and you will lose the backfire but it will sound like it is idling a bit fast.
I had the same prob with my 97, It was not the head gasket but the O-ring on top of the head. Replaced the O-ring and has been running good for a year now with no backfire. Hope this helps.
backfiring means you have an air leak or a lean mixture. Look for leaks at the header pipes or perhaps a crack in the exhaust. Cold air getting into the exhaust is usually what causes the backfire noise. You may have a lean engine running situation but the bike would have other issues besides the backfire. Let me know if you are having any other issues or if it just the backfire. Regards, RSelvy

what color are the spark plug porhlin tips inside cly end an the
color of inside exhaust pipe
also check the spark coil pack is not leaking by squirt mist water on coil while running
if stops you have a high voltage leak
other check is the fuel map sensor working
