I have recently purchased an October 2007 Italjet Torpedo 125. Unfortunately, the scooter won't start (the battery sounds flat) and, being very inexperienced with scooters (this is my first), I can't find the kickstart. Please help me.
Chances are the battery has never been replaced. You could replace the battery or get a 1 or 2 amp battery charger and try to charge the old battery. DO NOT go over 2 amps when charging. I would buy the charger before I bought a new battery. Saving the old battery is worth a shot. If the battery won't take a charge, at least you now have a charger for when you need it. Be sure water covers the top of each cell in the battery before charging.
I am unfamiliar with your specific bike but if it has a kick starter, it should be on the right side of the gear box near the back and close to the foot rest. It could be that your scooter does not have a kick start but has an electric start instead. Fix the battery problem then put the engine in neutral and press the buttons on the handlebars. One of them is likely to be the start button.
Two final thoughts. First, go to a dealer that sells Torpedo scooters and ask questions on how the scooter operates and user maintenance you should be doing while you own it. Get and read an owners manual. Second, in a safe area, practice emergency stops. Imagine a car pulls out in front of you and then brake quickly to avoid an accident. Do this for an hour. Now when something happens you will automaticly react instead of having hesitation by having to think, " Now where is the brake on this bike? ".
Please rate this solution as "FixYa" if I have answered your questions. Thanks!
The Italjet 4t has a kickstart on the LEFT side of the bike, towards the rear. I've found it an easy bike to start on the kickstart.
The battery is accessed by removing the right side plastic engine cover. There are three or four screws holding it on, one of which requires that you also remove the silver tail spoiler.
It's a standard small motorcycle battery, a Yuesa YB-9B, and so not expensive to replace if you find your existing one is shot.The Italjet 4t has a kickstart on the LEFT side of the bike, towards the rear. I've found it an easy bike to start on the kickstart.

The question was posted over 3 years ago. If the kick lever isn't on the right, I am guessing the owner found it in the left by now. Couldn't care less about ratings. Just correcting and adding to the information in the thread.
It may be three years old but it's still indexed by Google and so might help someone else.

In my answer I wrote, " I am unfamiliar with your specific bike... ". I am happy to let you answer all the scooter questions. There is less drag in neutral, this aids starting.In my answer I wrote, " I am unfamiliar with your specific bike... ". I am happy to let you answer all the scooter questions. hi, you replaced the batteries twice? using the same charger, have you tried another charger ?, okay let me tell you about mobility scooter chargers, it quite complex but some chargers will charge your new batteries correctly due to resistance etc, it more complex than this however now as your batteries get older your charger maybe having a problem charging your batteries , not because they faulty, now this is due to internal resistance once again the batteries problem reappears within 3 to 6 six months , it could be just the batteries are not good enough , I have seen a whole combination of faults , please bear in mind there are some dodgy batteries out on the market....
It is definitely frustrating when you can't get your scooter or moped started. The first thing you'll need to do is to narrow down the problem. In order for your gas scooter to start, it really only needs 3 things:
1. Your scooter needs to spark at the correct time. 2. Your engine needs the proper fuel/air mixture and exhaust flow. 3. You need sufficient engine compression.
Top 9 Reasons Why Your Scooter Won't Start:
1. Try depressing the brake handle when starting. 2. The battery has not been charged. 3. The battery is hooked up wrong. This is often the reason for blown fuses. 4. There isn't enough gas or two-stroke oil in the scooter. 5. There is a gas flow problem, especially on the Euro Scooter or Yamaha models. 6. The spark plug wire is not connected. 7. A low battery or bad relay can cause the scooter to only start by using the kick starter. 8. There is no spark to the spark plug. The coil is bad and needs to be replaced. 9. Turn the key to the "on" position.
Drain the fuel tank and fill it with gasoline. Use ethanol if it is available, the alcohol will combine with any remaining water and allow it to be burned and removed from your system.
Do yourself a favor. Ride to a dealership and ask if they would go over the recommended owner maintenance with you. Have them show you how to do an oil change, spark plug change, set the idle speed, add water to the battery, clean the air filter, check the fuses, change headlight bulbs, and lube the scooter. Purchase lubricants, oil, and spark plug from them. Make friends with the dealer. Ask questions; how often?, what quantity?, how do I measure that?, what tells me I need to bring the scooter in for maintenance or repairs? A good dealer will be happy to show you knowing you will get parts and supplies from them as well as have them do any major repairs.
Initially, have to inform you, have not worked on one. Being in the Philippines most that I have laid my hands on are Japanese with a sprinkling of Italian but don't recall ever working on a French scooter. Sorry.
Still as you posted "Any advice...", allow me to do some guesstimate:
most scooters would have the battery located low;
would not be more than 50 cms away from the starter motor/engine;
being a 125 engine, battery would have to be about 7A/H, a bit heavy, therefore battery holder would not be on any of the plastics, chances are to the frame;
likely to be under the seat but there would be the helmet compartment, so maybe lower.
With the above assumptions:
either under the helmet compartment front of the engine (but would have an easy access panel/lid; or
under the footrest/floorboard.
Pls update how close or how far, curious myself. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy New Year.
Pls be informed that due to my current rank and rating, even a Helpful would
be detrimental to my status. Should this solution not address your
concern, it would be appreciated if you could just not rate it at all. Cheers.
