You need to find out why the temp is going so high. Is it really getting that hot or do you have a bad sending unit?

Engine runs fine until temp reaches 100 deg then idels and runs very rough until cuts out .any ideas what sensor it could be?

It could be the temperature sensor , crankshaft position sensor or ignition module , It could be the ECM /PCM - engine computer etc. Rather then replace a bunch of parts that don't need to be replaced take it an have it diagnosed at A ASE certified repair shop .

When I jump in my car in the mornings (cold engine) and turn on the key (without starting the engine) the cooling fans come on (outside temp is only 60 degrees).

-No not to worry about it if your car never over head.
-No you can't get any reading if the temperature is at your thermostat's setting or below.
-It connect or (Works) ONLY when the temperature at that area reach above the thermostat setting or up to 200 degree or higher.

Good luck

What is wrong the temp does not get hot going down rasd

I would buy a new thermostat and flush the radiator coolant. Dexcool (The orange coolant) is known to clog up the internals including the temperature sensor in cars of your age.

While you are at it, I would strongly consider changing radiator hoses and clamps unless that was done recently.

If you are referring to the dashboard temperature gauge not moving...It means that your temperature sending unit may be faulty (or it's not plugged in). Dexcool is known to clog up the internals including the temperature sensor in cars of your age. Inspect the connector to the temp gauge for damage and replace the temp gauge.
A replacement temp sensor is about $15 at any auto parts store.

Good luck

Cuts off when it gets to temp

You say that the temp switch is good but are you refering to the temperature sender unit for the temperature gauge or the sensor switch ( 2 wires ) that communicates to the ECM to turn on the fan when the coolant temperature reaches a pre determined point. Find it and replace it

Engine light is on. had it scaned and it said that it could be low on coolant, checked that and it was fine. it said it also could be the thermastat or the coolant temp sensor. thermastat seems to be...

the electric fan will only come on if the coolant temperature is 200-210 degrees. if your car doesnt ever reach 200 then yes you have a bad thermostat. if it does reach high enough to turn on cooling fans then yes your temp sensor is bad.

1989 Nissan Maxima Radiator fans and Temp gauge not working.i have a 1989 Nissan Maxima and the radiator fans do not come on. I have replaced the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor and this did not work....

-The radiator fan will be kick on ONLY when the temperature reach about 190-200. Depend on the sensor that you have now.
You can test it by boil it and hook up a digital multi meter to it.
and make sure use a temperature gage to test with, so you know how hot the water when it kick on.

Good luck

Coolant temp sensor located on a 2004 dodge ram 1500 4.7

YOUR ENGINE OPERATING RATING TEMPERATURE SUPPOSE TO BE 190 TO 200 DEGREES. IF COOLANT SENSOR DEGREES IS SHOWING 190 OR 200 DEGREES IT WORKING.THAT RIGHT.IF ITS SHOWING 60 OR 80 DEGREES IT FAULTY. AND ENGINE WILL RUN POORLY.
