Gas runs out of from carburetor

After starting my 1994 Yamaha 750 Virago, gass was running out of the carburetor. A couple of people suggested that the floator might be stuck. Since the carburetor is underneath the gas tank, is there any way to fix this without removing the gas tank?

gas runs out of overflow tube

  • Anonymous Apr 06, 2009

I have a 1996 Yamaha Virago 1100. After sitting for the winter, when I started it, gas came out the side of the engine. After removing the air filter, I found a rubber tube where the gas was coming from. Just to debug, I tried plugging the tube but it would not start. I would appreciate any suggestions from anyone.

If you suspect the float is stuck, grab a screwdriver and tap the carb float bowl with the handle. you should be able to see this from the bottom of the tank. hopefully this will unstick the float.

if it doesn't, then it will require removing the carb and taking the float bowl off and seeing if the float is adjusted properly.

I had the same problem. The forward cylinder carburetor float valve is stuck. The only solution is to remove the carbs and repair or replace the float valve mechanism. And, yes, the gas tank must come off. It is the only way to have easy access to the carbs.

I did this for the first time a year ago and only cleaned and replaced the FV Mechanism, but it is happening again. The second time is always easier.

Quits running 1996 Yamaha XV 1100 Virago

Make sure the fuel system is properly vented (gas cap, carburetors) Make sure the petcock will freely flow fuel, If this is a vacuum system, make sure you do not have any vacuum leaks!! The carbs sound like they need a good professional clearing, setting, and synchronizing!!

1994 Yamaha virago 750, my headlight and instrument lights do not work. i have checked the fuses and they are all good. All other lights work, turn signal, tail lights, running lights, etc...any...

On older bikes the starter switch can start sticking and not fully return. The headlamp is commonly cut during starting to allow more power to the starter motor. But if the start switch does not fully return it can keep the headlamp off. Try juggling the switch with the bike running and see if the lights return. If they do then its time to take the switch apart and give it good cleaning and lubrication with electrolytic grease.

Your throttle cable is likely to be rusted. It can be saved with a liberal spray of WD-40 into the cable shroud and left to run down the cable inner. You have to remove this cable and hang up from one end.
Fuel residue is likely to interfere with the smooth operation of the carburettors. Remove the fuel line from tank, and remove drain plugs from carby's. Spray continously some Carburetor Cleaner (avail. all auto accessory stores) down the fuel hose till it comes out the base of carby's. Allow to evaporate and repeat. A full tank cleaning fluid is also available from most auto shops. Thoroughly check all rubber components, wheels and brakes before getting back on the road. Cheers

Have a 2001 yamaha 250 virago and it won't satrt,

You do have fuel in the tank? Pull fuel line from carburetor--turn fuel tap ON--fuel should run from line (into clean can or bottle). If none, the brass screen inside the tap body may be plugged. Remove screen and hold with pliers. Clean with carburetor cleaner from auto parts store. When you set choke, can you see anything happening? May have water in bottom of float bowl. Remove bowl to check (and clean).

Going to customize my 750 virago. im removing the air induction system and change to a gravity fed gas tank along with after market pipes. Is there any possible problems i might run into and need to be...

When changing to aftermarket pipes on a carburated bike I would recommend have the carbs rejetted, the after market pipes will change the fuel mixture and could cause the bike to run a little funny.
