If the clutch is a problem you will have difficulty selecting 1st only as the gears would be spinning from the engine revs.. I would say that the front input shaft (clutch shaft) bearing is failing allowing miss alignment of the synchros and not allowing proper engagement of the gears synchro rings. It means removal and repair to the gear box so the clutch can be inspected while the box is out.

SOURCE: my ford focus tdi 2003 cant select 1st,3rd or 5th gears.

Car is in limp in mode unless you have the tools to work on automatic transmission you will need to take it to a transmission shop. Of course you can check oil level but I suspect you have other issues.

My BT50 Mazda truck won't allow me to go into 2nd gear, it's really difficult and you need a lot of pressure on the gear stick, first gear is difficult too... Just had the clutch changed a year ago... Any...

check the box turret where the lever pivots for gear selection. IT may be loose here and not allowing proper alignment with the shift rail. The problem is that the shift rail selector for 1st and 2nd is not sliding freely and it is controlled by a position de dent ball that is spring loaded . Check the manual but there should be a plug on the side of the box in line with the rail that when removed will have a spring under it and a ball. IF the spring is deformed -replace it as it may be jamming the movement of the ball. At this point I do not believe that you will have to go into the box or that it is a clutch problem. A clutch problem would be indicated by not able to get 1st gear but second is synchronised so there would be little difficulty in that selection. The lever would be free to move also.

If the clutch is correctly adjusted, it will start to engage when releasing the clutch pedal at 1 in. off of the floor. When in Heavy traffic shift trans to neutral while at a stop, take your foot off of the clutch pedal to avoid overheating the release bearing

Peugeot 206 gear problems

Did your mechanics remove the transmission and make internal repairs ? Because there isn't any external rods or linkage on your car and if the transmission was removed to repair the cost would have been at least several hundred dollars.I believe yours has a top load shifter that connect to a gear selecter slide to change gears. I have worked on Peugots and to remove the transmission requires pulling the rear end assembly back to remove the drive shaft to pull the transmission itself. I have had such miserable time working on them because of the way they are designed that I wouldn't even consider working on another one. But the best of luck getting yours repaired.

Gears stick

If your car is a manual gear change, your clutch may need adjusting or repair or the gearbox oil may need changing.
If your car is an auto check to see if you are using the correct transmission fluid , Peugeot autos do not use normal ATF and will fail if the correct fluid is not used.
Hope this helps Marshall

Help im having problems selecting 1st and 2nd gear and the gear stick is very lose on my 99 206 any ideas?

there is a central plastic ball fitted to your gear stick. Open the leather cover and check every single ball (i.e one in center, 2 on the side and locking balls of gear wires). May be you need to remove the whole central console to have a look at your gear stick main frame. Its not complicated but time consuming. It better to take it out and check it completely rather than having the same problem again. The problem with gear shifting could be on gearbox side as you only mentioned the 1st and 2nd gear. But sort this thing out then you'll know better. If you need any help then pls inform.

The gear stick has no resistance, I can only select two gears and it feels like Im stirring porridge when I do try and select a gear.

i'm unfamilar with the exact car but it sounds like part of your gear selection linkage is broken. This would be the part that is used to select the gears you can't select. I have seen some cars that use two cables, one for 1st and 2nd gear and the second for 3rd and 4th gear. I have also seen cars that use metal rods from the shifter to the transmission much like the cable setup, one rod for 1st and 2nd gear and the other rod for 3th and 4th gear.

Hope this in some way helps.
