Hi and welcome to FixYa,

In the versions we have worked on, almost always, your description indicates too lean a mixture on at least one of the carbs (chances are the one for the front cylinder). Considering that it has not been used for over a year, the carbs would need to be pulled down and cleaned. Old/stale gas would have coated the inside of the carbs with varnish like substance. This would be blocking the ports, holes, jets, slides and definitely, the bowl, walls and floats. Other than the above, the fuel pump/regulator would also have to be considered.

Incidentally, I was made to understand that certain versions has had known issues with the carbs and a recall was done.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Why does my 318 lawn mower back fires

Charlene: According to " What causes a small engine backfire & how do I fix it? Backfire typically occurs when the engine is decelerated rapidly.

Common Causes of Backfire:

  • Lowering engine speed too fast
  • Gasoline, which contains higher blends of alcohol
  • Carburetor adjustment set too lean
  • Muffler construction can induce backfire
  • Higher than normal engine temperatures
  • Some carburetors can induce backfire due to the sensitivity of internal transitional passages
    (This condition cannot be corrected).

Possible Fixes for Backfiring:

  • Lower engine speed slowly
  • Follow small engine fuel recommendations and/or switch to brands with low or no alcohol
  • Adjust carburetor for optimum performance
  • Inquire with equipment manufacturer about increasing air volume to decrease engine temperature"
Charlene: I hope that helps! :)

Sometimes my FZR 1000 runs great but then sometimes it is powerless and backfiring ....what should I check or look into fixing?

back firing , can mean a lean (popping on deceleration) or a rich mixture backfiring a lot , . check your connections at the headers and your carb to engine , and carb to airbox ... air is getting in , . look at your air filter .... look at your exhaust for blockages ... if this is the exup (power valve ) model then check the valve actuator , as it can lock closed , ... either remove it or wire it open

one of the cylinders is missing. It doesn't fire sometimes and when it does, you get the backfire. Check the plugs. It should be obvious which cylinder is at fault.

Backfires on deceleration and also is getting black above shift side carb.

A lot of backfiring on deceleration is related to reused or leaking exhaust gaskets in the head . The gaskets are leaking air into the exhaust. If you are experiencing carbon on the intake side , I would recommend replacing the intake o-rings and gaskets, spark plugs, and spark plug caps. These can all be related to backfiring through the carburetors.

Backfireing when decelerating

it can be caused by a number of things including.
lean mixture--air leak intake or exhaust,
leak in exhaust gasket
low ignition voltage- bad plug,lead\resister cap
tight valve clearance
and a number of less likely problems like faulty kill switch, ignition switch\cable connecter, igniter.
If it is not the standard exhaust, the jetting may need a slight change

So first give it a tune and service, check valve clearances, new aircleaner, drain carbs, tighten exhaust bolts and clamps, intake clamps and bolts,it may need exhaust gaskets

Bike is back firing

Have you tried new spark plugs? One fouled plug or bad spark plug cap can cause backfiring. Possibly dirty carbs ( a stuck float). Backfiring on deceleration can be caused by bad exhaust gaskets where the headers attach to the head (an air leak)

How to repair back firing?

Backfiring during deceleration is caused by even small leaks in the headpipe and/or rich carburetion. I suggest checking your pipe for leaks and look into your jetting.

Some occassional backfiring is typical.
