That lose piece is called the float, it appears the stem broke off inside the float switch.
As it is a kenmore, you can order a replacement float stem from sears and do it yourself if you are handy.
You will have to remove the broken piece out of the float switch housing however. You will want to disconnect the power to your dishwasher first, then remove the front access panel at bottom of washer. The float switch will be directly under where you are pulling the stem under. You will have to try to rig up something to push the broken piece out through the standpipe, like a wire hanger. If you cannot, you can remove the switch fairly easy and get it out that way.
I have not worked on a kenmore, but it should be fairly simple to figure out how to attach the new float stem. Unless there is something mechanically wrong with the float switch itself, this should solve the problem.
Again, if you are working on it yourself you must disconnect the power!!!
That thing that broke is the float. It supposed be attached to an arm that shuts off the water when the tub get full. Did ya just replace the garbage disposal? If so somebody forgot to knock out the plug for the drain hose. oopzy. Food screen clogged? Ya might need to get down in the impeller and see if a bone or piece of glass has gotten into it. have you seen this video?
