    Hi.
    This is the 3rd time in 1 year and a half that I have take the bike to yamaha. In the 2 previews times they changed the spark plug and didn't say anthing else. I have had this problem almost since I bought the bike.
    The changes made to the bike:
    1. I have chenged air filter with a K n' N filter.
    2. They reprogramed the engine so that it would not shut down to eu 3 emission regulations from eu 2
    3. I have installed xenon light.
    4. Increased min rmp to 1500 from 1100-1200 that it was before.

    Also it seems that I have this problem more during winter moist days and also about 500 km after I get the bike back from the regular 5000km scheduled.
    The bike has 20600 km atm and I bought it with 0km.

    Hello there.
    Thank you for the swift response :D
    now to your question:
    1. Yes the yamaha certified mechanic did that for me, but it was more of a guess than a fix. ie "lets change that and see if you still have problems"
    2. about 8 lt/100 I think in the city. I do about 180-190 km with my 15lt tank
    3. stall and the engine stops. Then it won't start again. Some times it would start after 10 tries. I think that the problem increased when I increased the min rmp to 1500.
    4. Its in yamaha service again :/
    5. Yes I have 2 years warranty and now the bike is a year and a half.

    Hi.

        The engine shuts down either while underway most of  the time but it will shut down 30 sec to 1 min afterwards.

        I try to start it with an without throttle (most of the times without)

        Yes I can smell fuel.

        I have just recently changed the plug. The one other time that I was told it was a plug problem they did not charge for the plug but they did not clarify if they changed it or not (mechanic was not there that the time).

        As far as the type is concerned I don;t know if its iridium but I guess the standard plug would be iridium.

        Have a look at this recall notice (apparently its only for 06 models mine's 07).  recall notice

    Hello and thanks for taking the time to read through :D
    Now to your questions:

        "stall and the engine stops. Then
        it won't start again
        ." even before the K & N were installed?
        or only after the change of air filter;

        I
        had them before but the engine would always start again. After the
        filter this is the 3rd time in a year that it won't start again.

        "reprogramed the engine",
        before the K & N change? or after;

        They
        happened at the same time. When I serviced my bike for 10000 km.

        any popping sound(s) at the exhaust (not
        necessarily backfire
        ) when decelerating or engine breaking?
        Or when twisting up the throttle and suddenly releasing;

        I
        had them since day one. I think the exhausts are supposed to be like that

        are there any other electronic devices
        installed such as GPS, wireless phones, 2way radios;

        I
        have an alarm installed that does not work for about a year now but when I
        switch the flash on I hear a beeping sound along with the flash :D

    Offhand, ideas on probable causes of stall/stop may
    include:

        condensation in the air
        intake (most likely);

        electrical/ignition including the
        immobilizer (likely);

        actually
        turning the key to ON has become a chalenge since it is getting
        increasingly difficult to turn the ignition key...

        RFI/electrical interference (least
        likely
        ).

    Its at the service center again.
    same problem.

  • Anonymous Feb 13, 2009

    I have an 06 mt-03, after nearly 3 years of relatively hassle free motorcycling i have a problem starting my bike, i turn the ignition on, the ECU does its startup thing and the neutral light is on. I push the start button and the engine management light comes on like its supposed to with the starter motor turning only the engine does not fire and the engine management light flashes.
    I have taken it back to a yamaha dealer and they replaced the fuel injection cutout switch ( the one that stops the fuel pump if the bike falls over) asking me if i had dropped the bike recently. The bike had only once been on its side when it rolled off its side stand when I first got it, this being over 2 years ago. A week later the engine cuts out again in a scary way (travelling along a busy road at high speed around a corner, not cranked over to silly angles of lean which this bike can do easily) and trying to start it gives same flashing light as before. 1 week is a little poor for an electrical component to last, could it be faulty wiring in loom

    absolutely no performance mods fitted, only a sccottoiler fitted from purchase.

    Had same thing which was fixed for free under yamaha warranty.

    Get your throttle position sensor changed.

    this is a common problem and easy to fix, Its just on the side of the throttle body.

    good Luck !

    Hi and welcome to FixYa,

    With the indulgence of robotek, a couple of additional clarifying questions for zisis_p:

        "stall and the engine stops. Then it won't start again." even before the K & N were installed? or only after the change of air filter;

        "reprogramed the engine", before the K & N change? or after;

    Offhand, ideas on probable causes of stall/stop may include:

        condensation in the air intake (most likely);

        electrical/ignition including the immobilizer (likely);

        RFI/electrical interference (least likely).
    Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

    When it stops, does it die whilst underway, or stall from a start. Do you use any throttle when you are trying to start it? Do you smell fuel when you are trying to start.

     Fuel economy maybe a bit thirsty/rich. This could perhaps result in carbon fouling of the plug... maybe. If you have done 20,000 k,how many plugs have you put into it, and are they iridiums,

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

     I would not expect it to  be fouling plugs unless it was burning oil or there is a running to rich tuning issue. few questions to get a gist of the problem.

         Did the Yamagents do the tuning for you,

        what is your fuel economy like.

        You say it is more of a problem on wet cooler days. What does it do then, stall and not start, run rough?

        What have you done this time around to sort the problem.

        is it still covered by warranty

    Hopefully we can talk it up a bit pop some ideas on what the drama is.

     I will keep posting clarifications so other experts can also work on your problem. Other experts please do the same. Cheers

Checking the colour of the plug may tell you what the general state of tune if like for the bike, but the sudden stops sure sounds like ignition system failing. Fuel delivery still there, although it may well be flooding/overfueling for some reason when the problem occurs.  I suppose you have checked the VIN (RM021000000000301 to RM021000000008715)  just to be sure that your bike if not one of those affected by the recall. I would be asking the Yamagents to check for the mods/recall to be sure that whatever the solution is has actually been done to yours. The reference to wet weather would be inclining me to follow that up to the max. Sounds too close to the problem to not be it.

  • Anonymous Jan 09, 2009

    I am assuming the problem was occurring before the alarm failed, if it is an imobiliser type, i would be removing it from the bike anyway, just in case it causes you problems in the future. Let us know what the yama boys say about the recall mods and if they have been done/effective on your bike. Water is a silent killer fo electronics and connectivity. Better to get it sorted under warranty than have to resolve it yourself in the future. I would also be writing a leter to yamaha explaining the problem you have been having, noting the trips to the dealer to get it sorted so that you have recourse for action with them if the problem reoccurs after you warranty runs out.

    Tine to get it in writing. If they cant get it right for you, then you need a commitment from them to sort the problem out, Tracking these things in this way allows you to not end up with the problem after the warranty is up. Have you perhaps looked into the alarm. Is is possible that you had a plug fail early in the piece and the faulty alarm is causing problems now. It will be wired into the ignition circuit and may have issues that are stopping the ignition. worth looking into. Keep us informed about the outcome of this last trip to the shop. Hope they get it sorted this time around.

2007 Yamaha MT-03 660cc Fuel Consumption?

Question edited for clarity and MAKER!
Question moved from Cars and Trucks to model category.

Stated fuel consumption figures by the maker are seldom correct. You are driving in traffic and even changing gears! Figures are often given driving on the highway in top gear at 50 mph for 50 miles. When they say mixed driving, that is 5 miles to get to the highway and 45 miles on the highway. As long as the bike is running right, your tyres are at the right pressure, your brakes aren't binding and your spark plugs are a nice honey colour and not Black, fuel consumption is what it is. If you are 300 pounds, that will reduce consumption really badly.

1998 chevy s10 driving along and engine shut down.after sitting 10 min.it started but was rough.went 100.ft and it shut off again.sat for a while.it started and ran a couple miles like nothing was ever...

if it shuts off while driving and will not start back up for at least 10 minutes, then it may be the crank sensor doing this. is check engine light on! if so get it scanned to find problem code. if no scanner, auto-zone will scan for free. if light is on. CPS symtoms are: car dies and won't re-start till it cools down, or won't start at all. good-day ! crank sensor timing will be out of sync. it controls timing and sends info to pcm.

I just bought a used '03 650 vstar. I started it up and took it for a test drive and pulled it into my garage. My room mate was out there for quite some time checking out the bike. No idea what he did, but...

Colud your room mate have accidentally put the bike in gear? There is a switch on the kickstand that will killl the engine if kickstand is down and bike is in gear.
