It sounds like a major vacuum leak into the intake manifold. Check all of the hoses attached to the intake and throttle body for leaks including the power brake booster hose.
Could be a stuck fuel regulator or your cat could be getting clogged up and the random backfire clears it out temporarily. Too you may wanna check the condition of your injectors .fuel filter flow direction.and a possible culprit could be a stuck egr valve
Check your fuel pressure, and your spark. If you have good fuel pressure and spark, then it's probably something to do with either your ECM, ICM, or timing gear set. Autozone and O'Reilly's have a fuel pressure gauge that you can put a deposit on to use it. You can ask either if they can test your specific ICM, ECM.
Don't know what caused the backfire, but often the pressure from the backfire causes a vacuum line to come off (usually a large one; brake booster, PCV or similar size). this lets extra air past the throttle butterfly and raises the idle speed. find your vacuum leak and the idle speed should return to normal.
the crank sensor may be at fault. engine will not start. (engine backfires) or irregular rpm if engine starts at all. it controls timing and sends info to the pcm. (power control module).
I'ts quite possible that your distributor is installed one tooth off and is too far advanced, causing the plug to fire before the intake valves are closed completely. Turn it one tooth counter-clockwise and try it again.
Hello phwolfe,
Did not backfire but , boged out appling fuel. Found it was flooding because
the floats were over filling the chambers. Adjusted float settings (by eye )
problem solved !! Keeping the chambers 1/2 to 3/4 full worked for me.
My Bike is a 1983 Midnight Maxim 653cc. 4 Cylinder. Maybe yours is fuel injected ?
