Every gear shifts fine except fifth, which just grinds and has no catching at all.
Mor than likely damaged one of the planetary gear sets. Grinding in a trnasmission or rear end is a sign of loss of contact between meshing gears. Automatic transmissions engage two sets of gears internal to the trans to create a forward drive gear, changing between the gear sets creates different ratios anwhich in turn aloows for higher speeds. If the trans only grinds when in fifth range there is mopre than likely internal damage to the gears which 5th needs to operate. I would start by pulling the dip stick for the ****** and check for black or shiney material on the stick. I would then take a sample of oil from the trans by draining some from the drain plug if it has one, or possible drop the pan and check for foriegn matter in the fluid. Peices of metal shaving point to gear damage, and black material pont towards clutch wear/ damage. A worn or damaged clutch will cuase that specific gear not to engage and cause a grinding noise. Either way the concern is internal
Gear noise could be worn constant mesh gears or damaged worn synchronizers.either one will cause gear noise.

Sorry to say sir but running out of fluid/ transmission oil will definitely fry your tranny.

I am dealing with a very similar issue on my 03 Spec V , So far i noticed the clevis pin was loose and the locking hitch pin that slips thru it had fallen out . this caused the gears to not wanna engage due to the bolt behind the clevis which runs to the master cylinder was not getting pressed in when i pushed the clutch pedal in because the clevis pin was slippin on n off giving me no pressure up top .. I had to remove my lower dash panel in order to get visual n hand access to this pin , it is a tight spot to work in as well . May be easist to remove the 4 14mm bolts that hold yur driver seat in to give ya more room to work n stretch out ur arms

Hi,
Looks like your slip ring gear in the transmission has lost the gear teeth in the overdrive.
The repair would be to pull down the transmission and replace that ring gear, it is made of brass thats why the teeth somehow erodes when you try to force it.
Before anything else, better check also the cable shifter, the shifting cable might only need adjustment and your mechanic can adjust it.
That Sentra B14 have that problem of hydraulic high side power steering hose leaking, The problem would be in the hose crimping, over the years of vibration, the crimp seem to loosen and fluid would leak in there.
You have to replace the high side power steering hose w/ valve in it!
Hope that solve your problem!
Thanks for asking Fixya!

So if i get a new clutch...IF.. there is nothing showing a corrosion or rubbing or shavings from gears, if i change the clutch that could fix it? is there a way to adjust the clutch? thank you! i will check this first thing in the morning and let fixya know what i find out!
The gears and synchro or clutches are internal to the tranmission which would require a rebuild of the ******. I was under the assumption this is and automatic trans. Am I correct or is this a manual trans?(has a clutch pedal to depress the clutch)
