Before you replace the starter, check to see if you can jump start (or turn it over) by connecting the + term on the battery to the + on the relay. next check the connectors in the starter switch to make sure they are making good connection. if not THEN it's the starter.

Take the starter button off and put a 12 volt tester on one of the 4 leads that are wired into the button. Test each- If you find a hot line, take a small piece of wire and jump the current over to the other parrallel button. I worked on my bike for two weeks before I discovered this problem. Another problem was that the headlight would not come on. The starter would not crank at all. I took a screw driver and raised the brass leads on the switch so they would make contact and put the switch back together, and it worked. Good luck.

SOURCE: 750 katana click when starter hit battery is good

if you follow the positive cable from the battery it will lead you to the starter solenoid. it's jast a little square that also holds the main fuse. you can check if it's bad just by bridging the to posts together with a set of needle nose pliers. if pushing the start button just makes it click when you bridge it it should activate the starter. if the starter works when you bridge it, you know the solenoid is bad. if your stater still clicks when you bridge it, make sure your battery is at full charge. if your battery is at full charge and it still clicks, your starter is bad.

Starting problems

Need to know what year you have. If the starter solenoid is not activating the starter drive or jack shaft then the starter would spin freely and whine. If you have a bent shaft or otherwise that will stop gear engagement when you try to start it would just spin and whine. SO, if you get a whine the starter is spinning but not engaging.

If the starter relay makes a click everything up to there is working.
If the solenoid makes a click everything up to there is working ie the low current circuit is working. If the starter spins the high current circuit is also working and that leaves the above that the starter drive is not working to engage the starter with the clutch ring gear.

1982 Honda cx500 Wont start.

Use a volt meter and see how many volts (if any) youre getting at the starter when you hit the button. If youre not getting any, then the solenoid is bad. If you are, then the starter motor is fragged,or the motor is locked up,or hydrolocked. Try pulling the spark plugs out and see if it turns over.

2005 GMC Envoy. Wining sound from under the car at startup.

I suggest checking your starter motor. If the starter motor is staying engaged it could be a bad solenoid or a bad ignition switch.

I hope this helps.

I think the starter is going . The car does not turn over and crank like it should it starts to crank then it sounds like a wining noise

You say that the car will only turn over a little buit but not start. Is the car turning over and slowly dying out to nothing or is it just turning over and not starting?

1995 kaw jet ski 750st push start button and it just clicks it was running great new battery and new plugs

Open the electronics box and jump the solenoid . If the starter works you have a bad solenoid. If you hold the starter button and tap on the starter, and the starter works , you need starter brushes. If the starter has burnt coils, has a shorted armature , or is wet inside, you need a new starter.
