SOURCE: while riding all lights started to flash engine run erratic bike died of death bike will not start

Start with charging and load testing the battery. Then test the stator, to test the stator on the bottom of the right down tube is the plug that goes from the stator to the voltage regulator. With a multi meter, read the voltage from the stator, I forget the exact values but as you rev the motor the voltage should climb if it dosn't your stator is bad. If the stator is good take a reading again with the motor running at the battery cables, again I forget the exact value but you should have a steady reading at the battery, if it isn't and fluctuates it is bad.

SOURCE: Harley runs nice in 40-50 deg. weather only

Hey Tom, gonna try and help ya here...typical vapor lock/overheating is what your describing and i sure hear a lot of it w/harleys...are you using a very high grade synthetic oil , like castrol Syntec Actevo ? are you filling up w/ premium gasoline ?
make sure your timing is not too far advanced and don;'t let it idle too low...when you come to a stoplight stand up for a strech while letting your engine get air not blocked by your legs....all these things will help greatly......Good luck to you friend...Tim

I have a 1991 Honda ST1100 with about 48K miles. The starter will not turn over. It quit one day after a 100 mile ride in hot weather and would not start a couple of hours later. The battery checks out...

what exactly does "the battery checks out good" mean? What is the voltage reading that you are getting? If anything lower than 12.7 V then that battery is shot or on its way out.

The solenoid not clicking could mean 1 of 2 things.
1. Not enough juice going to it to activate it.
2. The solenoid itself is bad.

If you short out the solenoid by touching both terminals with a screw driver, does the starter start then?

Difficult to downshift into lower gears. bike has 4200 miles

I only hope you have not damaged a shift drum or bent a shift fork. My 2009 has never downshifted well unless I am moving. If I coast to a stop and down shift at the light , I often have to double clutch to get back to neutral. If you ride in hot weather and that is where you are experiencing the problem, you may just be using the wrong oil. Use only JASO MA certfied motorcycle oil. Do not use car oil or any oil that says Energy Conserving , it will shorten the life of the wet clutch and transmission gears. You may want to try a full synthetic oil , it will help the bike run cooler and shift easier.

The bike will not start

Just a couple questions, then I'll see if I can point you in the right direction. Did you purchase from the dealer or individual? What exactly is it doing when you hit the switch?

If I don't get back to you tonight, I will tomorrow morning. It's a beautiful evening here in Missouri The hurricane has pushed some real nice 70 degree weather up here, and it beats the hell out of the 100 degree heat we've been having. So, I'm gonna ride.
