Time for a top end or jetting?

The bike doesnt start after its warm unless the choke is on. It doesnt idle very well at all. Air mixture screw is 1 and a half out. Idle is about the same 1 and a half out but doesnt seem to make a difference witht the idle screw. When riding if your ******* it on a straight away and then let off to set up for a turn the motor seems to surge (rev up and down a little). Im thinking top end needs replaced which im going to do anyway. What should a compression checker read if the top end is fresh? I live in ohio if that makes a difference with the jetting.

I tried that before the last race. I alway clean the air filter and tear off the subframe and take the air box out and blow it out. Maybe I missed some thing with the jets. Any Idea what a compression reading should be?

Bike won't stay on unless choke is on

The choke makes the fuel/air mixture richer, so your stalling issue tells you that the main and/or idle jets are blocked. Take the carb off and clean all the jets. If you remove the mixture screw, tighten it gently first counting to the nearest quarter turn how far in it goes and write it down. Also write down what notch setting the main jet needle is on. If is has fuel injection, it is a whole different ballgame!

Changed oil clogged air filter with new after market air filter bike ran good until the third time I started it it would not idle unless it was choked

My Harley is very slow to warm up, it also does not like to idle without choke unless it is good and warm. It could be the clogged filter was acting like a choke, but ruining your gas mileage. Now with air flowing smoothly the engine needs a bit of choke to idle. It should not need choke once it is fully warmed up unless your idle speed is set too low. With the engine hot, check RPM if you have a tach. If too low, adjust the idle speed at the carburetor. I suggest you find the adjustment while the engine is cold.
