If just plates, then take off clutch cover, if more then plates, you have to drain oil and taking off complete right side engine cover, first pipes, back brake lever, R. foot peg.

Your clutch plates have lasted 25 years. It is probably time to get some new plates. Have your dealer get you a set of Barnett clutch plates.

SOURCE: 2001 Honda Shadow 1100, I put the kickstand down

You may be low on fuel, and none is reaching the fuel valve, but a more likely answer is that the bike may not be properly registering that it's in neutral.
There's a safety that kills the engine if it's in gear and the side stand is down.
Triple check the neutral (put it in gear and back to neutral).
Check the side stand and clutch safety switches.

Check if clutch plates are sticky, and check the clutch slave cylinder operation. If plates are sticky, put them in engine oil over night.

Clutch acting like it has air in it but no leaks

Clutch plates possibly worn. This would make it feel soft for most of the pull on the handle with very little travel in the lever when it grips. If clutch is okay change fluid(I am assuming it definitely is hydraulic)

Clutch is frozen from sitting in garage

This is a common problem that the clutch plates glue them selves together. You will need to remove the clutch outer case cover and disassemble the clutch and one by separate each plate re oil them and reassemble them.
