1976 Honda CB550 bogs down at quarter throttle

My 1976 honda cb550k bogs down at a quarter throttle and I'm assuming it is running too rich because I checked the spark plugs and they are black as night I was wondering what I need to adjust on the carbs to make them leaner. @

SOURCE: 1974 honda cb550 will not run?

• The first thing to do with ANY engine that has sat for any longer than a couple of months is to dump ALL the fuel in the tank and carb(s). ALL OF IT !! You'll want to refill with some high priced fuel that has fuel system cleaners (Like Chevron with Techron) not becasue you need high-test fuel, but because you need the cleaners. It's ether that or disassemble the carbs and clean out jets you can't find much less see. Your choice. The carb kits alone will cost you about $50 so a tank of high-test is looking pretty good, huh?

• Now the fact that you tried to crank the engine with old fuel has fouled the sparkplugs. All of them. Go buy all new sparkplugs.

SOURCE: what size spark plug for a 2000 harley davidson road king carbed,

Your Twin Cam plug should be a 6R 12 Harley Plug. Often times the back fire is just the nature of the beast depending on what type of pipes you are running. Harleys do run lean, its an EPA thing thtas why they choke them down from the factory. Since you have a carb you could have an intake leak around the Intake. Also Under the carb is an adjustment screw. Harley plugs it up so people don't play with it. You have to just drill out the plug this will set your air fuel. Whenever I take a carb off I drill out that plug. Heat your bike up operating temp and ear tune that screw. Only other way is with air fuel analizer or a dyno. good luck.also that backfire is caused by fuel hitting your exhaust when you let off just to let you know.

SOURCE: how do i adjust my carb for my honda crf 70 its either

To know if it is too rich or too lean or if its ok , you will have to remove the spark plug i.e. after a short run.
If the spark plug is blackish sooty thn its rich, if its totally whitish thn its lean, if is brownish, its ok.

To adjust this you will need to set the air-mixture screw. Tighten it all the way in slowly taking care not to overt tighten it as you may damage the tip of the screw, thn unscrew it 2 &h alf to 3 turns outwards, start your bike's engine and monitor, you may thn go either way alittle to suit the idling.
Best would be to replace the saprk plug.
Hope this helps!

What level on the needle valve does it go on for a stock cr 125

I believe it's in the middle, or out of five, third one down.
The needle is for you jetting after the pilot (idle) and before the main. Run it steady at 1/3 throttle for 10 minutes, shut it right off, and look at the spark plug color. It needs to be chocolate colored. Too light, move the needle up (Clip down) or too dark, move the needle down. (Clip up)
You can set the pilot and main jet the same way, by running it at an idle, then 1/2 to 3/4 throttle for the main jet.
Note, a bad lag or bog is usually too rich on pilot jet, or even into a rich needle. (too high needle)
