Dear Sir,
At moment the fuel light (reserve light) is on you have 5 to 6 liter in tank, if you are getting an average of 8km/l then you can easily reach 40km from that moment.thanks.
Once the fuel light comes on, i guess you have about 35 miles if you really ride slow. I suggest you start looking for a gas station as soon as the light comes on.
Not quite sure about your light problem, but sound like you might have something mis-wired from the ignition switch check the cannon plug for any bent or shorted pins, as far as the hesitation since the bike hasnt been used in awhile im sure the carbs/fuel injectors are all varnished up, you need to purchase some Sea Foam @ Autozone $10 pour in 1/3 can to 2 gallons fuel and replace or clean out your fuel filter if that hasnt been done, now ride it on an open highway for about 10 to15 miles and that stuff should clean it up and even return any lost hp.
change o2 sensors every 60,000 miles and use iridium plugs they will outlast engine.
check engine light will not come on until sensors are completely shot, this also goes for your mass air flow, had same issues with 99 beetle happened at 80,000 miles, changed all three items ended up with 35mpg after getting 24mpg before fix.parts are cheap on ebay.
