Question about 1985 Honda VT 500 C Shadow
Adding details i have a 1985 honda shadow vt500c, cleaned carbs, new plugs and battery but it will run for only a few seconds and any throttle i give it kills the bike. any ideas?
You did not clean them properly, you have to drain out the gas in the carbs and clean the air channels with thin wire, check the 2 diaphragms

Carbs gummed up. Need a serious cleaning or a full ruubers replacement/rebuild kit. Gas turns to gummy when left stting in the fuel bowls.
Use a couple of cans of Sea Foam.. best stuff in the world.

locate the crankase cover to the left of the engine towards the lower end of the motor. if the bike has a center stand place it upon it t\and undo the crank cover once removed you will visually see the pulse generator it is like a large type style magnet. good luck

The kickstand switch is either bad or bent out of position. See if you can activate the switch manually. Does the bike run now? If so, the switch is bent out of position. If it still won't run, jumper the wires together until you can replace the switch.

If your bike has carbs and not fuel injection, ( difficult to remember back 23 years ago ), then remove the carb slides and move the clip on the jet needle down one notch. This will richen the low end mix and provide it sooner. You may need to go two notches but start with one notch. Also, sync the carbs such that the slides on both carbs move at the same exact instant when the throttle is slowly turned from idle speed < engine off. Clean the carbs when you get a chance.
Please rate this solution. Thanks Cindi!
