Engine loses power and must pump gas to get it going again

1992 Volvo 740 Station wagon, Automatic. Problem: The engine loses power, mostly when revving low (or after stopping), and must pump gas to get it going again and speed up. Occasionally it has died altogether and then I have to wait and start it again.

I have also noticed it shaking, or vibrating.

checked the distributor cap - no moisture, no obvious burns (?), and no obvious cracks

Check spark plugs. If completely black and looks burnt, replace them

SOURCE: 1984 Volvo 240 DL Wagon not Starting and dying

In my 86 volvo this is where a relay was under the glove box area i believe it was the fuel pump relay. In my vehicle i washed the car and found it did not start afterwards after many hours of troubleshooting i found this relay was full of water causing my problem, they hang it upside down so water can enter easily, i took mine apart and cleaned the contacts with sandpaper, worked fine afterwards.

It is a right hand thread and you usually need an impact gun. Take the fan out of the way, to give you more room, I have found that helps.

SOURCE: '90 Volvo 740 2.3l turbo water pump install instructons needed

Go to an auto supply store like PEP boys or Advance Auto, etc., and buy a Haynes Repair Manual for the 740. You may be able to consult one at your local library for free. Even if it doesn't cover your model year, the replacement instructions are pretty much the same for all years. in fact even a 240 Volvo manual would be essentially the same. Pay particular attention to the installation instructions....you have to slide the pump on, and then rotate it a few degrees clockwise to make the upper o-ring seal. Good luck!

1992 volvo 740 wagon. want to know what to use to get the top starter bolt out - can't seem to find the right como

I bought a Craftsman socket at OSH hardware. Very shallow 6-point socket with a universal joint built into it. I think it was 18mm but I don't have it handy at the moment so check the size. That socket with a couple of extensions worked like a charm.

88 volvo 4 cylinder turbo station wagon. It idles at 3000-4000 rpms. If I hit the gas pedal quickly. It idles down for a few seconds then back up high.

It sounds like a good size air leak somewhere in the intake system. Check all the vacuum lines for cracks or loose connections. Check for gasket leaks by spraying brake parts cleaner along the intake manifold mating surfaces and listen for an increase in engine rpm . Don't use carb cleaner for this, or you could end up with an engine fire.

Where is the location of a fuel pump on a 1992 volvo station wagon

The fuel tank contains the fuel pump and sending unit assembly. If you go to the autozone website at autozone.com and register your vehicle you will have access to a full online repair manual for your particular vehicle. It's handy and it's free. It has information on the fuel system that you might find useful. Sure hope this helps and good luck to ya!

Not starting after replacing fuel filter and tune-up

I had the same problem with a 1989 Volvo 740 GLE station wagon. I did the same thing you did. But this time I talked to the local Independent Volvo service shop, not the dealer. The problem turn out to a bad fuel pump in the gas tank. You can replace it from inside the back of the station wagon. Just remove the floor panel to access the top of the fuel tank. But before you do; note that there are two fuel pumps, one inline underneath the car on the drivers side, and the one inside the gas tank. Before, you replace any of the fuel pumps check the fuel pump relay behind the astray on the left side. It could also be a bad relay.

(engine control unit) we had a similar problem a few years ago with our 1990 volvo 740 gle 2.3l station wagon. it was a glitch with the computer. got a mixed signal with the mass air flow sensor.

On the 1992 740, The back seat bottom folds up. (The release lever is on the side.) Once the back seat is up. Take off the head rest, the back seat (upper portion) will lay flat.
