Starts fine in neutral. won't start with clutch pulled in while in first. While running in neutral, it will shift into first gear but once I start to release clutch, the engine dies. symptoms are consistent. I tightened clutch cable but it's not going to be that easy. any suggestions are welcome.

Does the bike have a sidestand switch that cuts the power if the stand is left down? If it does, disconnect it and temporarily join the ends together and try starting....

Here are the possibilities > > Bent clutch push rod, missing push rod ball bearing or push rod, worn out actuator shaft cam, Missing friction disk (5), or pressure plate (4), totally worn out friction disks, clutch plates not installed in the correct sequence, extremely weak clutch springs, stripped teeth on the clutch hub, wrong clutch cable length (inner cable vs outer cable), broken shaft, bent then broken shift fork stems, broken slider gear dogs and a missing shift fork pin.
You didn't say if anyone had worked on the clutch or gearbox so I am throwing in nearly EVERYTHING possible that could create the problem. A little more background and most of the above can be ruled out. Get back to us.

gear selector may be jammed inside the casing or broken
check that the shifter is tight on the shaft!
check clutch adjustment
try rocking bike back n forth without using clutch while you try ******* the gear lever it may come unstuck
but get it looked at if it frees up!
SOURCE: 2007 yz450f has a low rumble when clutch is out all the way
I doubt the problems are related. New fiber friction plates are probably needed. The rumble described would indicate a bad bearing on the mainshaft. The shaft the clutch mounts onto. Hard to say if it is the left or right bearing (or both), but either way the case will need to split to replace the bearings. I would replace both bearings and also the sprocket shaft outer bearing while you are in the crankcase. A new seal on the sprocket shaft would be a nice touch as well.
Synthetic oils and "Special" lubricants put into the gearbox can cause slippage and some will cause the cork on the friction plates to swell. Never use synthetics in your bike.
SOURCE: 1997 Yamaha YZF 1000 clutch and/or transmission problem?
well this is something that is as you said " not normal" i would guess that clutch is smoked. after it warms up do a 3rd gear roll on at about 45 mph. if you drop the hammer and the motor revs and you don't go anywhere stop the ride and R&R your clutch
something else to make sure of is that you clutch fuild is good and has no air in the line
Good luck
