SOURCE: what kind of oil should i use for my 1985 yamaha maix xj 700??

Absent evidence to the contrary and based on the age of your machine, you should probably use 'normal' oil. I don't think you will gain any benefit from the use of the expensive synthetic. Your bike is air cooled? Air cooled engines are tougher on oil than are water cooled engines. Find out the recommended weight and service rating from Yamaha. Use that weight and service class at a minimum and a higher service rating if available. Go to to a good auto parts place, not the "fast food" version, and ask the counter guy and/or find a comphy seat in the oil asle and start reading the cans.

Let me know how you make out with this.

SOURCE: How do you determine the required oil level of the drive shaft?

there is a sight glass about the size of a nickle directly below the filler plug ,oil level should be midway or close to the top,you should see the oil level in the glass window,if not you'll have to remove the cover and clean or replace the sight glass window....

SOURCE: yamaha wiring

Check on ebay for a shop manual or Clymer manual. owners manual won't do any good. You can usually find one ranging from 3 to 35 dollars. Also check http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums.html. It is an excellent forum for free information on anything you want to know about your XJ.

Cant figure out which hoses hook to which valve lines on a 1986 yamaha riva moped scooter fuel petcock

Large line is fuel, from tank to petcock. Large line from petcock to Carb. small line is vacumn from intake manifold to petcock (small spigot). suck on this line & make sure Gas comes through Large line to Carb.

Yamaha maxim xj700 i removed carbs to clean...are there 2 fuel lines going into the fuel block??

I'm guessing that the fuel block you refer to is the inner side of the petcock assembly. If this is so, the larger line is the fuel supply and connects to a swivel pipe in between two of the carburetors and feeds all four through internal piping. The second smaller hose is a vacuum line to operate the petcock and runs from one of the rubber carb mounts to the petcock. My 85' model also has four vent hoses running from the top front part of each carb back and down between each one. I hop this helps.

Rear cylinder carb on 85 xv700 virago wont accept gas. was fine when put up last fall.can blow in supply line of front carb but not back carb.

The float needle valve has probably stuck in the closed position, probably caused by fuel gum. Worst case scenario is to take the carb off and clean it. Easiest scenario is to remove the fuel line and squirt carb cleaner into the valve area. Leave it overnight. Sometimes carb cleaner and tapping the carb will move it. Low pressure air can help. Once it's clear add some injector / carb cleaner to a tank of fresh fuel ( double or tripple the normal doseage won't hurt.)

Vaccum line routing on the carburetors of a 1985 yamaha xj700

There's only two , on the Ca. model , sitting on the bike second cylinder from left, the synching port goes to the petcock -on the carb joint nearest the block- It would be the only boot without a black cap n a spring clamp .And (it'll be a long hose) goes to the emissions can behind the air box on the right from the carb itself.(it has a plastic cover over it) Anything behind the carbs (between 1n2 then 3n4 ) is over flow tubes to the bottom of the frame.
