check the thermo switch on the radiator use some wire and connect the pins, if the fans come on then change the thermo switch, if they don't come on then the relay needs replacing. thermo switch works off negative feed so there should be no sparks if their is a spark then the electrics is a problem.
Drain the coolent, fan switch is usually on the radiator 2 wire switch disconnect wire coupler unscrew and replace. Thermo usually on the head/ barrels or the thermostat if its exturnal (one wire switch) unscrew and replace.

had one one time! lasted for about two years...yes there is a thermo switch, mine was same! heated for about one minute..then off....would come back on after cool down.to replace thermo was like as much as whole unit....crazy I just lived with it! I know this does not fix yours and i'm sorry ...your thermo could be cheaper! check it out
It seems that you are saying the thermo fan stops first, thenfotre the safety limit switch shouts off the gas. This would mean the thermo fan motor is bad. It is overheating, which cuts out the thermo fan switch. The gas only shouts off because the thermo fan motor is bad.
