Loosen clutch cable adjuster located on clutch cable on left side of bike near front frame. Make sure lots of slack in cable. Then remove derby cover, loosen locknut, screw in centre bolt to just where you can feel resistance (loosen it out first about a couple of turns as it may be touching clutch push rod) back off 1/2 turn, lock up lock nut and close derby cover. Remove slack from cable but leave about 1/8" (3 mm) slack on lever. If clutch still slips, then more than likely clutch plates gone. Smell will be quite obvious when derby cover is removed if clutch is burnt.

The clutch will not engage 2007 Harley Davidson FLHX Street Glide

You have more than likely got the new cable installed incorrectly. If all was working before the cable change, then you have done something wrong. First thing is to check your work. Next question is can you pull the clutch lever? If so, and there is no play there, then adjustment is probably all that is needed. First loosen the cable adjuster until to have loads of play in the lever. If you cannot achieve this, then you have installed the cable incorrectly. If you can get play, then remove the derby cover. Loosen the adjustment screw lock nut. Screw out the screw until it turns freely. Then gently turn the screw in until you can feel resistance. Back it off a half turn and tighten the locknut making sure the adjuster does not turn. Then adjust the cable adjuster until you have approx. 1/16" free play at the cable end where it enters the clutch lever perch.

I adjusted the clutch on my 1200 xlc 2008 sportster but it is still slipping. what should i check next?

if you adjusted your clutch correctly and it's still slipping, it's time for clutch plates.

To adjust the clutch, find the cable adjuster in the center of the clutch cable. Loosen the locknut and turn the adjuster inwards and all the slack you can in the cable.

Pull the derby cover off and remove the spring and the locking nut. Turn the screw in the center all the way out counterclockwise. Then go back in 1/4 turn. Reinstall the locking nut and spring and the derby cover.

Go back to the cable adjuster and turn it outwards until you have about 1/8" freeplay. work the clutch a couple of times and recheck the freeplay.

If the clutch still slips, time for new friction plates.

On 2009 super glide does it have to be in neutral to adjust clutch

being in gear or in neutral has noe effect on the way the clutch is adjusted, or any effect on the adjustment itself.

How to adjust clutch

To adjust your clutch, follow the clutch cable down until you find a cable adjuster usually protected by a rubber bellows type cover. Move the cover up or down and loosen the lock nut. Adjust the cable adjuster inwards to make the cable as loose as possible.

Now, remove the derby cover. In the center of the clutch assembly you'll see an adjuster. Loosen the locknut and turn the center bolt inwards until you feel resistance. Do not force the bolt as you'll be disengaging the clutch. Turn it inwards until you feel the resistance, no more. Then, back the bolt back out 1/2 turn and lock the locknut. Replace the derby cover.

Then go back to the cable adjuster and adjust the adjuster outwards until you have about an 1/8" play at the lever. Lock the lock nut down and replace the cover.

BTW: If you have too much oil in your primary, it will make the clutch drag and you will be unable to find neutral with the engine running. Make sure the oil level is no higher than the lower point of the clutch spring with the bike standing straight up.

My Cluch feels loose and doesn't grab till almost all the way out But doesn't slip is this normal

It sounds like your clutch needs adjusting. you may be able to adjust the cable and get it like you want it. Follow the cable down until you come to a rubber bellows type cover. Move the cover up or down so you can get to the adjuster. Loosen the lock nut and turn the adjuster inwards about a half turn and try it. Keep doing this until you get the engagement point where you want it. When finished, you MUST have about an 1/8" freeplay at the hand lever. If not, you need to go through the entire adjustment procedure.

Good Luck

How do I check my transmission fluid on my flhx 07 street glide it feels like its running a bit dry and its shifting a bit hard. Thank you in advance

Look on the right side of your bike. Find the clutch cable and follow it until it goes into the transmission. This is the clutch release cover. It should have a plug in it that takes a 3/8" Allen wrench or Hex key to remove. Check the level with the bike standing straight up. Keep the oil level between the two lines. Your bike came with H-D Syn3 20W50 oil. It takes 20-24 ounces of oil.

You may need to adjust your clutch to solve the hard shifting problem. Follow the clutch cable until you find the cable adjuster. Loosen the locknut and turn the adjuster inwards to get as much slack as you can.

Remove the derby cover. In the middle of the clutch assembly, there is an adjuster. Loosen the locknut and turn the adjuster inwards until you feel a resistance. Back the screw back out and turn it in again until you get the feel of it. You don't want to force the screw or you'll be disengaging the clutch. Go in just until you feel the resistance and then back off 1/2 turn. Lock the locknut down.

Adjust the cable adjuster back out until you have about 1/8" freeplay at the clutch hand lever. Lock the locknut, replace the adjuster cover, and the derby cover.

Good Luck

Clutch adjustment

There are to different adjustments you can make. The most common adjustment made is on the clutch cable under the rubber boot real easy to figure out once you slide the boot off. The second is at your ramp and ball. I don't ride a RK so I don't know the exact method, but if you stop by your local library they might have a manuel that explains it in detail. My library does.
