Two questions, did you use the recommended weight of oil (5W20W)? This is very important. Next do you have the SOHC 4.0 V6, it has tall aluminum valve covers.

  • Anonymous Oct 28, 2011

    Yes its a SOHC 4.0L V6

I asked because I had a suspension this was a 4.0 SOHC, have you had the recall done addresses the noise, it is caused inmost cases by leaking hydraulic cam chain automatic tensioners, they were recalled back in late 98, it is a free repair if it hasn't been done already. they are easy to change out. To find out if you need the recall visit your Ford dealer and have them run your VIN. I would also never use anything but the recommended oil. I double checked and your truck requires 5W-30W oil (not 5W-20W, my mistake), in this engine due to the way the hydraulic cam chain tensioners work I would not use 10W-30W, the thicker oil can cause slack in the cam chains and cause you the noise you discribed. I am 99% sure you have noise from a slack timing chain based on my 20 years at the Ford dealer.

    I mean "suspicion" not suspension

Not to start a brand war, but, yes, many owners have claimed the fram does not allow good oil pressure. In the last few years, frams are made from cheapest materials available (look up fram filters on you tube for testimonials), and perform the worst in independent tests of all filters, Not the same as Motorcraft. Best rated filters: motorcraft, wix, napa gold (made by wix), purolator, amsoil, k&n, royal purple-anything but fram.

but the thing is i can hear it for the back of the engine not from the front. and i read in the owners manual to us 10 30

The passenger side camshaft is driven off the rear of the engine, so yes it is a chain tensioner problem that is causing the noise, in fact it was most often that one that acted up and was noisy.. I have the latest owners manual from the Ford factory site, it states that you should use 5W-30 oil.

If you used a Fram filter, do yourself a favor and change it for a motorcraft. It will save you big time.

I worked for a Ford dealer for decades and never saw any problem with Fram filters, what exactly do you claim they do? Lower the usable oil pressure?? Ford doesn't make their own filters, contractors do and the Motorcraft name is put on them, so a Motorcraft filter could have been produced by Fram.

Thanks for the information, I've used Fram filters for 45 years just because they are sold everywhere, never had an issue in dozens of cars I have owned, I will however not use it in my new Dodge Charger R/T Hemi, the VVT system is very sensitive to oil pressure/volume issues and quality of oil. I am going to use OEM Mopar filters due to your advice. I have used ACDelco oil filters always in my 1996 Corvette, how does ACDelco rate?? Great information, thanks buddy!

  • montehammons Oct 28, 2011

Don't remember how ACDelco rated. But Mopar was also rated highly-top quality.

never had a problem with a fram filter here in europe ,as for the noise then without hearing it i couldnt say or comment but i would suspect a hydraulic tappet for what ever reason also if your in the southern states where the weather is hotter then i would use 20/50 oil although this is only personal preferance with a can of STP oil thickener additive ,just i am old school i suppose ,Now if this is a hydraulic tappet then to quieten it down i would add some genuine fairy washing up liquid to the oil .about three decent squirts and a cup of diesel or better still if availabe in your neck of the woods some gunk exterior engine cleaner and then run engine as normal motoring for a week or so and the noise will then stop as the cleaner declags the hydraulic tappet .then change the oil again with filter for a decent cheap brand from supermarket and use a detergent petrol /diesel turbo oil ,then change the oil every 5000/6000 miles with a oil filter every third oil change and the engine will last for ever .These ford explorers i have seen before and a petrol one with autobox but it was the only one as all the others i have seen are or were diesels with manual boxes and their not a bad bus for towing a 40ft 40 ton trailor ,try a nice citreon belingo diesel or a Vw caddy next time they will do well over 50MPG and nearer 70 MPG on a steady run which means more cash in the wallet ,try paying 7---10 dollars a gallon depending on country here in europe then would you still have your juice guzzler on the road ???

A ticking sound on a 06 ford f150 super crew 5.4L

Ticking sound could be coming from a Coil-on-Plug, or a pcv valve, or (hope it's not) a valve lifter which could be sticking. Sticking lifter noise often disappears when rpm's change, or the noise comes & goes. try changing the motor oil & filter right after adding an Engine-Flush Treatment to the motor oil, running the engine for 10 minutes at idle with treatment added to the oil, then draining the oil & changing filter while oil is still very hot. That last part is very important, so be careful not to burn your hands - be careful. -- The sticking lifter is a likely cause if motor oil has not been changed at frequent intervals in the past (every 3-4K miles) -- dirty oil causes sticking lifters.

It could be rod knock: if so, plan on an engine change/rebuild. On my 97 F 250, 5W motor oil is recommended,so you can't put in heavier oil. But that's not a solution. Something mechanical is askew.
