But if the tensioner has come loose which it shouldn't have then an inspection of the links will further tell you if it should be replaced. There are ways to inspect the timing chain. This is a rough guide.

Timing Chain and Sprockets Cleaning and Inspection

  1. Clean the components with cleaning solvent.
Caution Wear safety glasses in order to avoid eye damage.

My 2003 Altima 2.5s makes a humming type (vibration?)sound.

I have a 2003 Nissan Altima making a humming sound towards the front of the motor at idle in Park.

Not sure if alternator or compressor.

Not rattle from timing cover has to be something Nissan already denies.

How do i change the timing belt on a nissan altima 2001

A Nissan ultima does not have a timing belt,it has a timing chain, look up in your manual for your maintenance schedules when and at what mileage you are needed to change the chain, usually the chain is changed when it is loose through stretching in wear over mileage,a very loose chain has a rattling noise in the engine compartment by the cam gears, good luck ,hope that I was helpful.

I have a 2003 Nissan Altima. Do I have a timing Chain or Belt. How long does the timing chain last? I have 195,000 miles on my car.

Timing chain. Normally they will last for at least 150,000 miles or longer. If it becomes noisy or car is hard to start, backfires, or performance is sub-par have it checked.

Timing belt replacement millage

The Nissan Altima does not use a timing belt, it uses a chain driven camshaft, timing chains have no set mileage and should last the life of the engine.

What will my car sound like, if the timing chain needs to be replaced? I have a 1997 Nissan Altima.

there will be a rattle the front of the engine. the end with all your pulleys and belts on. And it will be hard to work out if it's in the engine or the pulleys.

It is a common that a TICKING coming from the front of the engine is the timing chain guide.

Hi there,
you will need new upper timing chain and sprockets. Common problem on altima your year. Nissan has TSB for it. First they had us remove the upper timing chain guide, but after that, they had us replace all top chain components.
