Question about 1984 Honda vt 500 ft ascot

I just bought a 83' Honda ascot vt500 and it started up fine when i picked it up and it and ran perfectly. However, in order to start the bike the previous owner had wired a toggle switch to the starter cellinoid and when the key was turned on and the switch was flipped it would fire up with no problems........When i brought the bike home I rode the bike and left the toggle switch on and when i stopped the bike stalled and upon examination the plastic from the toggleswitch connections were smoking. I left the bike sit a good 5 minutes and put the key onto my key chain. When i tried to start it again, the contact from my other keys caused a spark from the ignition to the fuses and now the bike won't start and the headlights and/or power does not work when the key is turned on. THe bike will still turn over/crank but it will not fire up. Oddly enough the lights on the dash and the headlight light does start to come on when cranking but dies when the switch is turned off after unsuccessfully starting the bike. Can someone help me?

Your battery is most likely the cause. The tail light and dash light do not draw much juice from the battery. However the headlight and starter are a different story. Are you absolutely sure you turned everything off before you took your break? If you are and you don't ride your bike a lot you should get a trickle charger for it. Use it when not riding. It will prevent you battery from completely losing it's charge thus protecting the battery.
If you do ride often then you should have the battery tested. You may need a new one. Remember that once a battery has been drained too low, permanent damage can occur.

Was the main 30 amp fuse checked/replaced? The main fuse would on the starter relay. To locate the starter relay, follow the cable from the battery's + terminal.

I just bought a 1984 honda ascot vt500. It will turn over but not fire. It has been sitting for somewhere from 1 year to 3 years. When i try to jum p start it all of the lights and everything works.


the carb is clogged up. You will have to remove the float bowl and clean the jets. use spray carb cleaner. Use a very fine copper wire strand to probe the jets--do not scratch or englarge. Empty all the gas out of the bike including fuel lines. use fresh fuel. Be sure to count the number of turns you make on any adjustment screw and write them down. This will make it much easier to put back together in proper adjustment.

I just got a honda ascot vt 500 it doesnt have the pick up it should and backfires a little when i let off the gas when i first got the bike it had a set of coils from another bike not an ascot but he had...


Have you checked the carb boot were it attaches to the cylinder head? some times they crack especially if it back fires. Doesn't take much to disrupt the fuel going to the head. Also it would be a good idea to adjust the valves, remove the caps on both sides of the cylinder head, should only take an 1/8 to a 1/4 turn on both sides.
