I had an XV250 and I used a large drill bit and drilled holes 5 - 6 holes it the back of the mufflers around the pipe and it gave it a great sound.

The problems with a plunger style choke happen when the rubber on the bottom becomes deformed and does not seal or the spring does not push the plunger down hard enough, or the cap breaks so the plunger is not pushed down hard enough. If you put your finger over the hole and the bike runs properly your bike is running on choke. You have to block the hole deep inside the carb to shut off the choke. I assume the original problem was that the bike would not idle .If this is the case, take the carb apart remove the slow jet and clean the jet and the carb body out so fuel will flow at idle. This should fix your no idle problem.

On my 1995 250 virago the oil drain is a phillips head screw located on the left side of the bike behind, and slightly above the kick stand. It's almost directly below where the shifter connects to the transmission. Not sure if it's the same for a 2002, but I suspect it likely is.

From what you are describing it sounds to me like your drive chain needs adjusting & lubricating regarding the clutch how longs it been since your last oil change & service if its over due the oil may have become sticky & your clutch plates are not releaseing drain the oil remove the old filter fit a new one & add fresh oil this should go a long way to remedying your problem

motorcycle headlights stay on at all times the bike is on, kind of like running lights on a car. on some model bikes, when you first turn on the key the headlight doesn't turn on so that there is less draw from the battery so your starter can use the current your light doesn't. but once the bike is started or the start button is pushed, the headlight will remain on until you turn the key off.

your carb. is flooding the cylinder when its not will cause ring damage.turn your gas pitcock off when not in use.get carb cleaned &adjusted.

Sounds like a slightly bent shift fork. The slider gear isn't quite engaging into 2nd. If the bend gets worse then you won't get into first and the pedal will get real stiff in those gears. The repair is best done in the shop.

Look at the right side of your engine at the bottom, you will see a small round glass where you can see the oil level. The bike has to be level for you to get an accurate reading. The filler plug is on the same side of the engine on the top of the crankcase cover.

inspect it very well as there has to be a reason for the lock nut to shear off
if it is the same size , splines etc and is in good condition it should fit

If not an engine problem then it sounds like something is loose (sorry to state the obvious). Could it be your sidestand because as you are checking for the visible, the stand will be down as you look around the bike and is only up when riding. Hitting a bump or normal vibration could cause it to hit against something (exhaust, frame etc.)

A lot of people will frown on this solution but it is quick and easy to test. Spray a shot of starting fluid into the intake, if it pops when you try and start then lack of fuel is your likely cause.

had same problem with a suzuki fix was to tie two overflows together with a t joint...
..its an airflow problem of some sort... also, some bikes have to run on reserve or prime always...its not a perfect system

Check fuses, wiring and connectors around headstock to clock cluster, check earth connections.

The clutch master/lever has a safety switch that tells the bike if the clutch lever is in (no power to rear) or out (power to rear). After almost 30 years this switch may have failed, making the bike think that the clutch is engaged regardless of lever position. If you have a multimeter you can test the switch yourself. Since the bike starts properly in neutral (also a safety feature) then the clutch lever switch is your most likely problem. Your bike might also have a side stand switch like mine. It functions much the same way, if the side stand is down and the bike put in gear it will kill the engine.

Check fuses and relays. Unplug and replug all connectors, make sure battery cables are clean and tight.
