96 yamaha virago xv750 stuck in first gear, what can i do?

left hand clutch lever to clutch is failing. gear box dry. gear selector damaged. buy it like this or out of the blue it happens now. if clutch is bad one can jiggle any bike in to any gear. ,key off. jiggle means move bike forward an back a tiny bit. and it shifts./ check and test the clutch first. the clutch must work first or all key on tests can be super dangerous. google how to test any motorcycle clutch. end to end. test. hand lever to clutch actual.

With gas line removed fuel

That is a built in safety. If you're fuel line were to rupture, you wouldn't want the fuel pump to empty your tank. The pump runs for several seconds until pressure is built up or the time-out period is reached, whichever comes first. If you clamp the end of the fuel line, the pump should run for a very short period to indicate the pressure sensor is working. When the clamp is released, the pump should start back up and run for several seconds until the time out period is reached.

What type of oil is used on the transmission of a

To change your oil you will need 4 quarts of oil, a filter, and a new aluminum drain plug washer. You can reuse the old drain plug washer if it has not been squished out of shape. Your motorcycle comes from Yamaha usually with 20w-40 mineral base motorcycle oil. You can use any oil that is JASO MA certified motorcycle oil. 10w-40 for cold climate. 20w-50 for warm climate/touring. Car oils use different additives and may cause scoring in certain types of cam bearings. Do not use any oil that says " Energy Conserving " on the label . It will shorten the life of your wet clutch and transmission gears. If you choose Synthetic oils, they will help your bike run cooler and shift easier. Pour in three quarts of oil and add enough from the fourth quart to reach the high mark on the dip stick or inspection window. Make sure the motorcycle is upright or on the center stand when checking the level . You will probably need 3.1 to 3.4 quarts to hit the high mark. Run the motor for a minute or two to fill the oil filter compartment with oil. Now recheck the oil level and top up as needed.

sounds like they have jumped the clutch safety switch, probably because it doesnt work. You may need a new clutch switch, the side stand safety switch could also be acting up.and may also be a reason for this. You could try a multi meter on the switches, to identify the fault, but it can be intermittant, as you may have noticed, also make sure the wiring is good and hasnt been jammed in the steering.
