buy rebuild kits and clean them realy good internally and replace all the parts...keep them in order if you take them off the rack.

First make sure that the starter is not loose and that there is nothing blocking the starter drive from enguaging to the flywheel. Also check for 12 volts at the starter when you turn the key. Could also just be a bad starter.

Bad battery. Take it to Allstate Battery Centre to check.

Serious battery drain.

and the number 1 reason, Alternator not charging it.

Read this forum about loosing the electrical problem with your vs1400. With a voltage tester , trace the power from the battery following the main power cable to find the problem.

The serial number relates to either DT65ESX or DT65ELX and the year of manufacture is 1981

Sounds frustrating!

A couple of things.

white smoke is water vapour
blue smoke is oil
black smoke is rich mixture

The fact you get a shock from the handlebars worries me. The high tension circuit should be a sealed system, coil to plug to earth. Here is a trick. Start the bike in a garage, or somewhere that is pitch black. Look around the coils, plug leads and plug caps for sparks shorting out. I think you have HT power leaking somewhere. Good quality leads and plug caps should fix it if that is the case, but testing in the dark is a good test. Let your eyes get accustomed to the dark before starting the bike up.
