Thinking of buying one of
Fuel injection is a wonderful thing. It self adjusts for fuel and altitude. If you do any modifications to the exhaust or intake you will have to buy a power commander to further compensate for the changes. If you have a problem with the fuel injection system you will have to pay some one to work on it.
Carburetors have been around forever and the technology has come a very long way. Modern carburetors can compensate for altitude changes nicely(vacuum style). If you change your exhaust you can clean and modify/rejet the carburetors yourself. A nice feature if have a problem far from a dealer.
One thing to keep in mind, fuel injection adds a measured amount of fuel each time the injector works. This makes fuel consumption very consistent. Carburetors flow fuel according to how much you twist the throttle. You will get poor fuel economy if you always twist hard on the throttle. On the other hand , if you are gentle with your handling of the throttle you can often minimize your fuel consumption and possibly get better fuel consumption.
My last dirt bike vacation would have been ruined when my riding buddy had carburetor problems after running out of gas the first day. We disassembled the carburetor and discovered a loose jet, wrong air screw setting, and the vacuum piston spring installed incorrectly by previous owner. We were amazed it ran at all. Cleaned the carburetor, reassembled it correctly, and put settings back to stock. Now the bike ran like new and the rest of the week of riding was saved. Call me old school , but it sure is nice to be able to fix something yourself.
Modern motorcycles are well built, well designed, and extremely dependable. Buy the motorcycle that is most comfortable, offers the options you want/need for your riding style. The V-star offers a lot of chrome if you are into that. Just remember: Chrome Don't Get Yah Home.
Why is the speedometer reading faster than the
Because the tire is a smaller diameter then it needs to be to give you an accurate reading. If a tire diameter is too big , you will get a slower reading on your speedometer. If a tire diameter is too little you will get a higher reading on your speedometer. A tire that is manufactured can say it is a certain size , but it can bigger or smaller than that size with in a certain percentage and still be the size they say. Say you are running a 100/100x19 and your speedometer reads too high a speed. Then, when you replace the tire try a 100/110x19 size (taller) and you may be able to correct the inaccuracy.

How to replace rear brakes
Raise wheel off the ground, take off rear axle nut, take out rear axle, knock out rear brake panel spacer, unbolt brake panel stop bar, unhook brake cable/rod, grab wheel and slide off spline (away from final drive) , and roll wheel back far enough to slide out brake panel. Don't forget to grease final drive spline with moly60 paste from your local Honda dealer when you reassemble.
Is it very difficult to replace rear brake pads on
Personally I have never replaced pads on that particular bike but if it is like most rear disk pads, should not be too bad. I just remove the 2 bolts holding the caliper to the frame. Lift the caliper off enough to slide the pads out. Get a small C-clamp or something so you can gently push the caliper piston back in. Then install the new pads and bolt the caliper back on. Be carefull when pressing the piston back in because is might cause your master cylinder to overflow a bit. Once the pads are on the bike, pump the brake a few times until the pedal gets firm. Should be no need to bleed the system as long as you don't open any brake lines.
Hope this helps!
Battery won't charge
remove the battery, service it and try to have it charged with a battery charger.if it doesnt pass a load test replace it. if it is good after all, clean all connections and moniter it for a while to ensure it is being charged by the bike.

Fuel knock ? Only when accelerating , the more you
With out hearing it I can only give you a few things it might be.
The computer is not telling the engine to advance the timing under load or the bike has been standing and the fuel has go really bad.
Now for what i think it really is, it has got low on oil at some point and the conrod to crank bearing is worn or the small end is also worn out so under load the engine is knocking. I recommend taking it to a dealer to listen to and run a oil pressure test on it.
