Harley had a bunch of bad speedos around your year. Check with a dealer or service rep to see if your bike still qualifies for a free replacement.

May be normal. When cold ,the bike should idle fast for a few minutes. If started hot, will idle fast for a few seconds. Cold idle should not exceed approximately 1800 rpm.

Not sure about the radio, but the spot switch is for the two white lights on either side of the headlight.

Your Crank Position Sensor, or Cam Position Sensor is likely to be the problem. If there is no signal from crank position sensor, bike will not fire the coil. ECM has no referance to position of motor. Making timing imposible.

2002 Harley... | Answered on May 30, 2009

This sort of problem is associated with excess fuel in the cylinder that is on itsexhaust stroke. Unless you have replaced the ignition system and changed to single fire, you are sparking the cylinder that is on its exaust  stroke too. So if there is excess fuel in the cylinder and the valves are open, you can get a backfire when the plug fires.
get the bike serviced and whole fuel tank and external area cleaned .and then refill the fuel in the tank and check out. ----------------------------------------- if this does not solve your problem then .....in your bike there is engine coil the resistance of that coil should be exact between 4-6 ohms.if its more then 6 or less then 4 you will get a backfire .if its faulty the coil pack needs replacement.get it checked at ant garage center for the resistance of coil pack. please do rate the solution. thank you for using fixya.keep updated.thanks.

Hi,

You will get no help from HD because of the age of the bike. Put a couple small hex nuts in your tanks and shake them to get all the loose stuff off. Or look on Ebay for used tanks. There is no easy or quick solution to your problem. You just have to clean the inside of the tanks and keep the tank filter clean. Also your carb bowl and idle jet will clog. If your tanks are not dented or scratched, Harley has an exchange program for painted parts. Check with your dealer.

OR

To adjust the inrichner you will see a small platic ring behind the knob. tighten it a little and that will hold it back.
On the sputtering, your slow jet might be slightly plugged with dirt. You need to pull it and check it
Good luck and happy riding.

Your bike needs to go to a Harley Dealership so they can plug it in to their computer and 'read' the trouble codes, and see why the engine light is lit. SORRY, but I know of no other way to troubleshoot this. That's the price to pay for today's computerized components monitoring the bikes' operations.

Hi, Kevin I hate when that happens and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery must have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead-acid batteries.
2. Faulty alternator/generator and or voltage regulator.
3. Loose or corroded battery terminals and or cables especially the "NEGATIVE" cable, look for loose, corroded, or broken connectors inside the cable harness at "BOTH" ends.
4. Faulty main circuit breaker or ignition switch, check for loose connections and continuity.
5. Faulty system relay or ignition relay, check for continuity.
6. Faulty ignition coil, ignition/electronic module.
7. Faulty CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, or BAS sensor, corroded, loose or broken wire connector pins/sockets.
8. Throttle cables and or idle speed improperly adjusted hot idle speed should be 950 RPM to 1000 RPM.
9. Faulty neutral, side stand or clutch lever safety switch.
10. Fuel tank empty
11. Fuel tank contaminated with ethanol sludge.
12. Water or dirt in the fuel system, or clogged filter.
13. Quick disconnect check ball stuck.
14. Restricted, blocked or kinked fuel line.
15. Faulty fuel pump.
16. Faulty pressure regulator.
17. Faulty or clogged fuel injectors.
18. Lean angle switch is faulty or needs adjustment.
19. Catastrophic engine failure, perform a compression test.

Hi, Anonymous the Thundermax could be faulty if you still have your old ECM try replacing it for testing purposes only, before testing any electrical component in the Charging System it is "IMPERATIVE" that you have a fully charged battery of 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage, the battery is faulty and must be replaced. AGM type batteries fall into this scenario more so than lead-acid batteries. All voltage readings will be on the DC scale except for Stator Output which will be AC you will need a multi-meter to conduct the following tests. "WARNING" never plug or unplug any electrical connector in the charging system with the engine running
1. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
2. Check the voltage drop at the battery when you hit the starter button, anything below 9.6 volts you might have a faulty battery.
3. Make sure your voltage regulator is properly grounded with a clean tight connection, then check voltage at the battery with the bike running between 2000-3600 RPM, depending on your system specs, your readings should be 14.3 to 14.7 volts. If you are not getting these numbers or the reading is 15 volts or higher replace the voltage regulator.
4. Faulty regulator diodes can allow excessive amounts of voltage going back to the battery causing it to overheat, boil its contents and swell the casing. The excessive voltage will also spike the charging system allowing light bulbs to surge brighter than normal until they fail along with the main circuit breaker.
5. Unplug the connector to the alternator and hook your multimeter leads to the alternator (pin/socket selection does not matter) set the multimeter to AC volts, at an idle the multimeter should read 16 to 20 volts AC. at 2,000 RPM 32 to 40 AC volts, 3,000 RPM 48 to 60 AC volts. If you are not getting these numbers, you may have a faulty alternator rotor.
6. Set the multimeter to OHM'S, connect one lead to the alternator (any pin/socket) and the other to a ground, the multimeter should read infinity. Connect both leads to the alternator multimeter should read 0.1 to 0.2 OHM'S. If you are not getting these numbers, you have a bad stator.
7. Check all wiring in the charging circuit for worn or chaffed spots and all wiring connectors in the circuit for corroded, broken, or loose pins/sockets, which is the # 1 offender.

Hi, Mark excellent question to start with you need to confirm both cable jam nuts are back as far as they can go, then insert the cable ferrules into the throttle twist grip. At the carburetor, I always start with the return cable that has the spring first, insert the cable end ferrule into the throttle shaft wheel and then the spring into the cable guide, install the pull cable then at the throttle sleeve back out the cable threads just enough so when the twist grip is twisted back all the way open, so is the butterfly plate in a perfectly horizontal position and lock down the jam nut, then take up the remaining slack with the return cable until there is 1/8" free play at the grip then lock down its jam nut.
