2002 Harley Davidson XL 1200 S Sportster Sport - Page 3 Questions & Answers
Is there a larger gas tank I can put on my 2002
some of the aftermarket manufacturers make what they call a "king tank". I don't know how much more fuel that will give you if any at all. that's the biggest tank a Sporty that I've seen. Now, I have seen a set of Fat Boy tanks on a Sportster and they look good. Of course, this would require that you fabricate a custom mount for the tanks.
Clacking noise at different engine idles on my Yamaha V Star
Lots of bikes make a clacking in the transmission , especially when cold at idle. Basically the engine accelerates and decelerates between each piston firing, and you hear the backlash in the gears slapping back and forth. Without hearing it I can't say for sure, but find someone else with a similar bike and see if it sounds the same.
Check engine light on momentarily
you can rest the warning by unhooking the pos.+ batt. cable but it should be change in the programming so it does return. Mine does the same and keeps giving what HD calls a historic code miss fire on 1 coil. Some times it can be something as simple as aftermarket plug wires.
How to adjust the throttle cable on an 2002 HD
Look under that throttle grip. You will see a pair of cables comming out. The one towards the front of the bike is the pull cable (opens the throttle) the other is the push cable (closes the throttle in the event the spring fails the return the throttle to the closed position) You will be adjusting the pull cable towards the front of the bike. You will see 2 nuts there. a long one and a short one. I think its a 10 mm wrench in size. Either way find a pair of wrneches that fits those 2 nuts and losen them turning the upper nut counter clock wise and the lower clockwise. Now you will be able hold the cable to spin the large nut to tighten the cable. as you do that periodically wiggle the throttle to check tightness. DO NOT overtighten or the bike will idle up when you turn the handlebars. A little bit of play 1/8" to 1/4" is normal free play. Its a good idea to start the bike and idle it while turniking the handlebars back and forth to make sure you have not gone to far. Once you have got it where you want then tighten the little lock nut in place and you are done.
Sporty won't crank.
Take the leads off the battery and clean the mating surfaces with a wire brush and reinstall. Check all the grounds are tight. Put the battery on a charger on low overnight to get the voltage back to at least 12.5V and then try again. If you don't have a charger, they are under $20 at Walmart.
If the starter still does not attempt to turnover, try jump to the battery positive terminal. If the starter turns over then, you know it is in the starter switching system. If not, starter?
My girlfreind has a 1997
The speedometer reading change when pushing the button means that this button was probably installed to recalibrate the speedometer. The size of the rear wheel was probably reduced, so the speedometer needs to be calibrated for the smaller wheels. As long as the speedometer reads right, I wouldn't worry about it. As for the oil level, it shouldn't be changed. There's marks on the dipstick indicating how much oil is needed.
