Hi Bridgetsommerfield, there are many different methods out there to winterize a bike but this is what I do to my Harley every winter if you know your bike is going to be idle for months or longer here are some tips you can use to make restarting whenever that day comes to a hassle-free breeze.
A. Remove battery and keep it close to a battery tender/charger that you can hook up to at least once a month for 24 hours.
B. Drain the fuel tank and inspect the inside for rust, dirt, ethanol sludge, etc, remove and clean the petcock filter if you are carbureted, remove the fuel pump and check the pickup filter and the plastic delivery line for pin holes as these are common with age.
C. Drain the fuel lines going from the fuel tank to the carburetor/induction module.
D. On carbureted models remove the main jet access plug and drain the float bowl or, if necessary, remove and drain the float bowl!!!! this is very important as old fuel can turn to sludge and gum up your jets.
E. Drain engine, transmission, and primary oil this will eliminate wet-sumping and other various leaking situations during the storage time.

Hi, Stepone your bike is a cruiser with a long stroke designed more for torque rather than high-speed most stock VN1500's are lucky if they hit the 100 mark and bad things can and will happen when you get into the 3 digit atmosphere, if you want to go fast it should be done on a proper race track with the appropriate safety gear and emergency personnel, if you ride long enough you will crash, it's up to you to decide how fast you want to be going when this event occurs. Carb is not letting enough fuel into the engine. That means the mixture is too lean. When you choke it, you restrict the air flow into the engine and now the air/fuel mixture is correct and it runs. Check the carbs and injectors if it has them.

Hi, Scott if your bike has been sitting idle for months or years and you did not do any pre-storage maintenance I feel your pain it will probably have a dead battery and not want to start or if it starts it will idle and run poorly, here are the following steps necessary to complete in order to get your bike back to an acceptable running condition.
1. If your battery was 3 years or older when you last had the bike running you should replace it.
2. If you believe your battery might still be serviceable remove it from the bike and put it on a 1 or 2 amp trickle charger for 24 hours. If it is the old lead acid type with visible cells and acid levels fill each cell to the top line with distilled water and replace the caps, run the vent tube into a plastic or styrofoam cup, any cells that are cloudy/milky replace the battery.
3. After charging remove the leads and let the battery sit for a couple of hours then check the battery voltage with a volt meter, you should have 12.5 volts or better, any readings in the 11 volt range you need to do a proper load test on the battery and replace as necessary, any readings in the 10 volt range you have a dead cell and replace the battery.
4. Drain and flush fuel tank, google " how to clean a motorcycle gas tank" find a couple forums to view the different options available.
5. Remove your air cleaner and clean and re-oil per Mfg. specifications.
6. Remove the carburetor, disassemble and decontaminate with a carb dip or if you have EFI remove injectors and clean with carb spray and compressed air
7. Remove fuel valve and filter disassemble and clean as necessary, remove fuel lines and replace with new ones.
8. Replace spark plug with a new one and check for spark.

Sounds like a drive shaft problem. Could be bent teeth that only mate properly when moving forward and jam up when moving backwards. Easiest thing would be to remove the rear wheel and check the condition of the drive teeth on the inside of the wheel hub and the output face of the shaft. If they look okay, try turning the shaft without the wheel attached. If this sticks in either direction it will require a strip down and may even be back at the gearbox. Sorry, but it could be a big and costly job.

Hi, Anonymous for this situation I would call my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry. If necessary transport your vehicle to the dealer or shop and have a professional technician take it for a test drive, if it is in running condition, and give you a written estimate of repairs and answer any specific questions you may have about your issue.
