Hi, procedure is pasted below. Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

To install:

  1. Place the timing chain around both sprockets. Be sure that the timing marks are in alignment.

CAUTION When installing the timing chain, have an assistant support the camshaft with a suitable tool to prevent it from contacting the plug in the rear of the engine block. Remove the distributor and the oil pump/distributor drive gear. Position the suitable tool against the rear side of the cam gear and be careful not to damage the cam lobes.

  1. Turn the crankshaft and camshaft to align them with the keyway location in the crankshaft sprocket and the keyway or dowel hole in the camshaft sprocket.
  2. Lift the sprockets and timing chain while keeping the sprockets tight against the chain in the correct position. Slide both sprockets evenly onto their respective shafts.
  3. Use a straightedge to measure the alignment of the sprocket timing marks. They must be perfectly aligned.
  4. On 238, 318 and 360 engines, install the fuel pump eccentric, cup washer, and camshaft sprocket lockbolt and torque to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm) If camshaft end-play exceeds 0.010 in. (0.25mm), install a new thrust plate. It should be 0.002-0.006 in. (0.05-0.15mm) with the new plate.
  5. On 400 and 440 engines, install the washer and camshaft sprocket lockbolt(s) and then torque the lockbolt to 35-40 ft. lbs. (47-54 Nm). Check to make sure that the rear face of the camshaft sprocket is flush with the camshaft end.

Dodge Ram 1500 put in timing chines and now it will not start. Why?

Did you time the chains correctly? That's critical - the cam sprocket and the crank sprocket MUST be in a certain position when you put the chain on or the engine WILL NOT run.

2000 318 ram van wont start new ecm sensors got spark gas

If you are getting spark to the plugs and fuel spray, and you have compression and the spark is at the right time, you should have explosion.
Is it possible the valve timing is off - timing chain issues ?
Are the new plugs fuel-fouled ?

I have a 95 dodge ram 1500 318 just did a rebuild on the motor and i am am having problems timing it I have put it in timing but it seems it keeps getting out of timing.. it have a new timing chain and...

Number one piston all the way up. Your crank pully should line up "zero" or TDC with the line on the pulley.
The rotor should be pointing to the #1 spot on the distributor cap. (If it's off, it will be facing 180 degrees off, then turn the crank one revolution.) If this doesnt jive, your distributor may be off a tooth.
Also, ...are you sure the cam was positioned correctly? (With the crank pulley at the TDC mark, the dot on the lower gear straight up, and the cam gear mark straight up.)

Keep burning up coils on a 1990 Dodge Ram Van 2500 with a 318 motor.

there should be a white ballast resistor in the circuit to cut the amperage back on the coil.
Check or replace ballast resistor sometimes they was mounted on firewall next to the ignition module either a 2 prong or 4 prong white ballast resistor.

88 dodge ram charger 5.2 ltr engine....intermittant spark

I have a 1988 dodge ram charger with a 318 motor with throttle body. It runs really good when I start it up and drive it for about a half of an hour.
But after that when I step on the throttle a little bit, it hesitates. If I let off a little bit, it will go or if I really step on it, it will go also, but if I just hold it there, it really hesitates If I stop, the idle jumps up and down so much it causes itself to stall. It seems to only do this at low RPM's. If the RPM's are higher it's fine

How to set a timing chain on a 1992 dodge dakota 318

Usually there is a dot on the crank gear and one on the cam gear. Crank is up and cam is down but you still need to make sure you have TDC=top dead center

Line up of trans to motor doing clutch replacement 88 dodge ram

Leave your clutch assembly bolts loose, so the clutch plate can move as needed to line it up, then tighten them after tranny fully in place. I believe most autoparts store now will lend or rent you an alignment tool if necessary. I guess I was lucky, I always seemed to find something I could use to align it by eye.
