I have a 2004 saturn vue. my problem is that whenever i put my key in to start the vehicle the key turns but the vehicle doesn't start. the lights come on on the dash. it takes about 5-10 minutes of working the key back and forth before it finally starts. what could be my problem?

Hello: You could have a intermittent ignition lock cylinder. I would get the codes read Auto Zone, Advance Auto or O'Rielly can do that and they may not charge you.

Yes its both, your ignition in that year had problems they had to reposition the ECM and it had alot of ICM failure, with a key in igition problem, There no saturn dealer, so GM dealer are your only source, 2004 Saturn was declared a lemon due to transmission failure, and ICM failures rates
My 2004 Saturn Vue had the same problem. I thought the ignition had to be changed and I drove the Vue a long time with the key hard to turn and pushing it in before turning it. I mentioned it to a Saturn Dealer mechanic while having warranty work done. He told me a new key had to be made using the key code (located on the inside panel on the driver door). They made it and it totally fixed the problem. I think any GM dealer can do that for you.
The keys on this vehicle have a problem with wearing down to the point where it's a pain to get them to work in the ignition cylinder. Examine your keys for wear and that may have been your problem since day one.
I have a 2004 Vue and I have the only key I got with it (used car) worn down to the point where it will no longer work in the back door and is a pain to use in the ignition cylinder. It also falls right out of the ignition cylinder when the car is running. I have a copy of the key that was made when I got the car which works just fine and doesn't fall out, and looking at the two side by side, you can see that Saturn's key has worn down substantially since I got it two years ago.
Per your description, it sounds like you can not rotate the key tumbler.
If this is the case, get a small can of WD-40 and a container of "canned air", the same you would use to clean your computer key boards and such.
Spray the WD-40 directly into the key tumbler slot were you insert the key, use the tube that comes with the can. You want to try and wash it out a bit. Hold a rag under it so the oil doesn't drip on your carpet.
Next, use the "air in a can" to blow excess oil and debris out of the cylinder.
Try the key again, you should be OK. Repeat if necessary.

1. Try putting the gear shift in neutral and then attempt to start. If your VUE starts, replace the neutral safety switch.
2. Turn on the headlights and attempt to start while someone is watching for the lights to dim. If the lights dim while trying to start, remove starter and have it tested.
3. Take proof of ownership to the dealer and have them cut a new key. There is a chip inside the key, that when it's inoperative, will let you turn the key to the start position, but vehicle will not start.
