If electric choke not working and blade on carb is not fully opened, that would cause your issue...check for power at choke stat, if not, check fuse

Rewiring entire 1971 el camino interior and under the hood

Wow, quite an undertaking. I had an '81 El Camino and wish I had never sold it. Originally it had a 267 c.i. V-8 with a Rochester 2bbl carb. I put in a Chevy 350 4-bolt main crate engine, Edelbrock intake and carb, and Hedmann headers (it ran like a scalded dog LOL). My advice is to look for a Haynes manual covering the '71 model year. They have complete wiring diagrams in their manuals, but the wire routing will be up to you. Good luck.

86 el camino stalls under load

As mentioned above, engine could be starving for fuel; but
also consider ignition system - as engine makes more power, maximum cylinder pressures increase. A higher spark voltage is then needed to ignite mixture (at a few degrees before top dead center... top of piston travel).
If coil is weak, plugs fouled, or plug gap too wide, adequate spark may not occur. This may cause missing,
loss of power, sometimes backfiring (backfiring may occur if timing is off, or intake valve leaky, also). If you replace the fuel filter, 'kit' the carb, but problem remains,
look to ignition system.

Diagnostic process - put a fuel pressure gauge in line, where fuel line enters carb. Rig so can see gauge, while driving. Have a passenger watch fuel pressure as you drive; especially while accelerating. If fuel pressure drops during acceleration, then its either fuel pump or filter. If pressure remains stable, consider carb issue.
If possible, test with exhaust gas analyzer, while engine
under load (possibly at an emissions test place). If lean under acceleration, its a carb problem. If not, look at
ignition system (emission test diagnostics should help here, also). Oh, and one thing I did once.... forgot to release parking brake..... duh.

Best of luck !

Is it nesesrry to knoew the camshaft lift to time

No it is not, however a high performance cam will make it harder to adjust for smooth idle.

1982 el camino 305 4 brl has just developed backfiring @ carb , ran great after tune up but still had backfire @high speed . It now backfires @ low speed. Could it be timing belt? \ 131,000 miles w/ 400...

the timing maybe off but it could be a miss adjusted carb. there is no timing belt it is a chau=in and that is most likely not the problem. timing is corrected at the distubtor. but i would check the carb it may be dupming to much fuel

I have an 85 and its backfiring out of the carburetor,i just re did the carb, and all top gaskets-intake manifold and valve cover, also put in new water pump and thermostat

Double check you spark plug wires to make sure you have the firing order right and aren't off time on the distributor. You should also re-check you timing.
