1997 gmc sierra. interior light left on, battery dead, jump started, ran for 15 min. tried to restart after shutting off only thing that happened was drivers lock locks and 3 guages, oil , gas, and pressure...

You probably didn't run it long enough to charge up the battery. Put a voltmeter on it and see if it needs charging, or get it charged up, or get another jump and run it for a half hour and then see if battery is charged up enough to start the engine.

If the security light is on or flashing, you may need to reset the security system.

Jump start

I would say you never checked to see if the battery is any good

I most likely is dead or below 12.6 volts & you never jump a dead
battery,you try charging it

Jumping is not charging a battery, you need to own a battery charger

If the battery keeps draining or won't hold a charge you need
a new one, then if the problem exists you have someone do a
Parasitic Current Test to find out which circuit is staying on

My ford 500's alternator went out. we replaced it and the battery is new. why won't it take a jump and start?

Hi Jenny,

I'm assuming the battery was new before the alternator went out.

If the car was running off the battery until both died, the battery may no longer be able to hold a charge or hopefully it it taking the lions share of the jump amperage to charge itself.

When you jump the car, try the headlights. If they are dim (or off) you have a bad jump connection. Try reseating the cables.

If they are bright, let the battery have some time to charge. (With the other vehicle running).

If after a few minutes, you get nothing from the starter, comment back. We'll look into other areas.

Best of luck

Mike

My 1998 isuzu will get jump started but wont hold the charge i thought after it runs for a couple of mins it should recharge it self wats wrong snl

If the battery is bad it will not hold a charge. Have your battery checked a the local parts house or your mechanic. Also have the charging and starting systems checked to insure they are working properly. Battery should have a reading of about 12.8 volts, alternator should be putting out between 13 and 14 volts. Starter should not draw to many amps.

Won't hold a charge

its the battery. the battery holds the charge and the alternator charges it so when you jump the car it stays running because you alternator is providing power when you shut the car off you have a bad battery that isnt holding the charge needed to start it again.

New battery will not hold charge

Check your power distribution box under hood, usually close to battery for blown fuse, may be one for alternator circuit in there, otherwise you'll need to get a voltmeter on that battery to see if alternator is charging or not.

Won't stay running

I am guessing that you put in a new battery drove it for a day at most and went out the next day and it wont start. Well if this is true then you will need an alternator, your battery is not being charged. Your car can start a run without this but you wouldn't get that far and eazy way to figure this out is either charge your battery or have a friend jump, be sure to let it charge for 3-5 min. before trying to start.
If it starts than remove the jumper cables and let the car tun for another 2-3 min and turn it off. If you cant restart it than you will need a new alternator
