The easiest way to help you is you can purchase a repair manual for your vehicle at an auto parts store like napa,Oreillys or auto zone the manuals are around 20 dollars and have all the specifics you will need to do this your self. these manuals have diagrams and step by step instructions. good luck and hope this helps you.

After replacing a timing belt and componets, how do I set the timing on a 1997 Ford Escort LX with a 2.0L single overhead cam, std emission engine with A/C and a 5 speed manual transmission?

If you mean valve timing (there is no adjustment for ignition timing), see diagram below from autozone.com. Make sure belt is tight on the right side with gears in these positions:

Fig. Fig. 11: The timing marks on both the camshaft and crankshaft pulleys must be aligned like this before removing or installing the timing belt-2.0L SOHC engines ea0a8b0.gif

Changed timing belt - won't start could i be 180

an easy way of checking if your timing is right, is to take off your rocker cover and turn the cam shaft until the cam lobes on no.1 cylinder are pointing straight up this means that the valves for no.1 are completely closed, now remove no. 1 spark plug put a long screw driver into the plug hole resting on the crown of the piston, now rotate the crank shaft and watch the screw driver rise to its highest point before its start to drop again, this called top dead centre ,now check your timing marks to see if they are alright or just refit belt using this method and u will be a 100%

WHAT I TIMING MARKS FOR FORD ESCORT 1987

the timming marks will be behind the timing belt cover. There will be marks on the gears and also marks on the block. Line the top gear with the top mark and the bottom gear with the bottom mark. Please note that you will need to undo the battery for a few minutes and then reconnect. This allows the computer to reset itself. Hope this helps

Diagram for fan belt repair

2.0L Engines
See Figures 11, 12 and 13
The accessory drive belt for 2.0L engines has no provision for manual belt adjustment, since these engines use an automatic belt tensioner. Drive belt slack is taken up by the automatic tensioner.
Movement of the automatic tensioner assembly during engine operation is not a sign of a malfunctioning tensioner. This movement is the tensioner self-adjusting and is required to maintain constant belt tension.
The belt tensioner has a belt length indicator. If the indicator marks are not between the MIN and MAX marks, the belt must be replaced.
