There is a switch on the brake pedal shaft that releases the lock on the shift lever. Check all the fuses and then check the switch to see if it is loose of defective.

This allows the shift lever to move from the PARK position.

Some automatic transmissions also provide an 'overide' switch near the gear lever, to allow manual release of the gear lever.

If neither of the above resolve this, then you will need to check the operation of your brake switch, mounted on the brake pedal.

you should hear a click from the solenoid when you apply the brakes. If your brake lights don't work, your shift lock release won't either. There is a bypass method for emergencies in your owner manual. Check fuse for brake lights. And switch on brake pedal

No, that's wrong. The setup on the Sonata doesn't normally require messing with the shift lock release at all. I had the same problem tonight for the first time after owning the car for a year and a half, that's why I looked up this issue.

You must press on the brake pedal to release the shift lever. Start the car, and have someone watch the rear brake lights as you press the brake pedal. If the rear brake lights do not turn on when the brake pedal is pressed, the plug for the brake light switch is probably off. This will also keep the shift lever locked. Check around and underneath the brake pedal for any loose wires or plugs and repair as necessary. You can manually release the shifter by inserting a key or screwdriver into the shifter release slot. Check owners manual for the location of the release slot.
