2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Logo

I have a 2002 Jeep grand cherokee limited with a 4.7. The problem is after several attempts to fix what sounded like a lifter tick I shorted out the oil sender and blew the ASD fuse. I then changed out the ticking motor with a used one and now my tranny wont shift into 1st or overdrive. It did for about 20 miles after the engine swap and the stopped working. It drives fine and the tranny seems to be fine it just won't start out in 1st. It also has to be started in 2nd manually or it will start in drive. I have already replaced the TCM and it changed nothing. Could it be the PCM or could it need to be reprogrammed? I also traced all the wires from the TCM and they are all good. I do have a code p1698 and from what i've found out the tranny is in limp in mode.

Starting the engine is not the starting I am referring to. I mean starting from a stop, like a red light.

The engine starts fine. The starting I am referring to is like starting from a red light or stop sign then the tranny "starts" in drive not first and never shifts.

Sounds light you need to change the neutral safety switch. You should be able to start it in drive. This could account for the limp mode..

OK thats totally different. Miscomunicatoin, I think. Then just like my dodge truck the solenoid package needs replaced. I have the exact same problem. I can downshift to low and it will start in second , but not first. If i leave it in drive it starts in third. This is just a worn out solenoid package. I am going to take mine out and see if I can find Orings, So I can repolace them all in the package. None of my solenoids are bad, Its just the seals that are bad. This might be your case also. But I would check fuses and the TPS,TRS first. Because this is part of what the TCM uses to control the shifting process. Also check you MAF, this si also part of the process, yet minor.

I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee limited. When I start it there is a clicking sound in the front and whenever I push the gas the clicking goes faster. Let me knoe what you think the problem is.

clicking sounds that increase with motor speed can be a number of things, it can be a bad belt, water pump, or anything else run by a pulley , a stuck lifter, or even a bad cylinder. I'd need a little more info to help you,, Does it just tick, or is it a low thumping sound? slight ticking sounds can be a arching spark plug wire going to ground, those are easiest to locate when its dark and just looking at the motor while its running, you see the spark. If you could narrow the sound down a little, I could be of more help

I have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee limited edition 4.7 liter V8 2wd. Recently it has just died whilst driving on the highway 40mph city driving. It just died quickly and all the gauges went dead like...

The first thing I would check is to make sure battery is securely tied down, cables are connected, and in good shape. Sounds basic but it has caused this problem for many of us.

I have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited which had a bad water pump and overheated, waterpump has been replaced but when engine starts to heat up engine has a ticking sound ? Any idea what this is ? No...

Ticking can come from so many places I could write all day... Use a screwdriver or a long extension as a stethoscope and try to isolate the source. Best guess I can make without seeing/hearing it is either you cracked an exhaust manifold or a valve lifter is sticking (only a guess) If it's a lifter, you can add a quart of marvel oil and usually it will quiet down.

Does 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 have hydraulic lifters? I posted a question a few days ago regarding engine loud ticking which sounds like lifter noise. It doesn't have that deep sounding knock. I went to...

I would not believe any thing some parts store loser told you. Theres not a V8 built that doesnt have hydraulic lifters, unless its some fancy racin engine. It has hydraulic lifters, but unless you dont change your oil every 5k miles and/or use some cheap oil, there should be no problems. You should have a real mechanic look at it, and verify that you have good oil pressure. If it does, I would change the oil and use some MOBIL 1 and drive it, the oil will clean the lifters somewhat. If the eng has low oil pressure, that will need to be addressed.

Average cost to replace lifters on a 2002 jeep grand cherokee 4.0

depending all that is done about $300 dollars thats 12 lifters test 12 push rods replase rods $4.00 each rocker arm cover gasket oil filter and oil change afterwords. This does not include any replacement of oil pump or flushing which may be required, also would recommend a top engine clean before doing lifter replacement so when you change the oil once.

Lifters nocking on my jeep cherokee

I had the same problem , Come to find out it was the crank barring's and not the lifter's. Take one of the crank barring's off and feel the crank where the barring goes and if it's rough it's more in likely the crank and not the lifter's but if it's smooth put the crank barring back pull the valve cover's and there's the lifter's , pull the nut off the lifter's and pull the lifter rod's out roll them on a flate surface to see if there bent. Then go to a auto part's store and get the haynes manual it will tell you everything you need to know.
